To vape is to inhale vapor created from a liquid heated up inside a device. The devices have many names—vape pens, pod mods, tanks, electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS), e-hookahs and e-cigarettes. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and their repeated use can lead to nicotine addiction or increase the user's risk of addiction. Some e-cigarette brands contain nicotine salts to mask the harshness of nicotine and make it more palatable. As of 2018, all tobacco products must bear the required nicotine addictiveness warning statement on product packages and advertisements in order to warn consumers about the presence of and addictive nature of nicotine.
The researchers said that the findings suggest that if tobacco cigarette smokers who use e-cigarettes for a healthier alternative to tobacco won’t benefit by the switch. Cannabis and CBD e-liquids usually contain other chemicals, such as base liquids or flavoring agents. They may cause side effects similar to those of nicotine-free e-cigarettes. Young people who vape nicotine are more likely to start smoking cigarettes in the future. The 2018 NAP report concluded there’s some evidence that nicotine and nicotine-free e-cigarettes can damage oral cells and tissues in people who don’t smoke cigarettes.
Most modern cigarettes are filtered, although this does not make the smoke inhaled from them contain fewer carcinogens and harmful chemicals. Nicotine, the psychoactive drug in tobacco, makes cigarettes highly addictive. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related disease and lose on average 14 years of life.
Youth ENDS use raises concerns about nicotine addiction, negative effects of nicotine on adolescent brain development, and other potential health harms, including increased risk of initiating cigarette smoking. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also called electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, or vape pens, are battery-powered devices used to smoke or "vape" a flavored or unflavored solution which usually contains nicotine. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recognizes the increased use of ENDS, especially among youth and young adults, as well as its use by those attempting to quit smoking tobacco. Although e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, for regulatory purposes, they are considered "tobacco products" by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). E-cigarettes can go by different names, including vapes, vape pens or sticks, e-hookahs, hookah sticks, mods, and personal vaporizers.
FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS, including components and parts of ENDS but excluding accessories. An outbreak of EVALI in late 2019 and early 2020 put thousands of people in the hospital. Since then, EVALI cases have been declining, but people who vape can still get EVALI. Research from the CDC shows that vaping among youth has declined somewhat since 2020.
Please be advised that many of these stories contain graphic and upsetting photos of injuries. Exposure to nicotine can also rewire a young brain to become more easily addicted to other substances, including cocaine and alcohol. Even if a cartridge doesn’t contain nicotine, other harmful chemicals may be present.
"Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. "Even with the current relatively low use of e-cigarettes among adults – 3.7 percent – health care costs are already substantial, and likely to increase in the future if youth continue to use this product," said Max. "Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. The 2022–2023 NDSHS had a series of questions regarding policy measures designed to address e‑cigarette use. Support increased for all e‑cigarette policy options among the Australian population (Figure 6).
Altria Group chief executive William Gifford told analysts during a second-quarter conference call that makers of unregulated e-cigarettes are responding to consumers’ switching to nicotine pouches. According to the latest Nielsen convenience store report released Wednesday, Zyn sales have jumped 74.6% year-over-year with total annual sales now in the $2 billion range. Tobacco industry executives and analysts are sounding alarms about a surge of unregulated nicotine pouches entering the U.S. that is chipping away at regulated products.
Although e-cigarettes do not give off smoke like tobacco cigarettes, they do expose people to secondhand aerosol or "vapor" that may contain harmful substances. Scientists are still learning about the health effects of being exposed to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol. The FDA monitors the national usage rates for all tobacco products, including an annual youth survey, and has seen a drastic increase in youth use of e-cigarette products in recent years.
Similarly, a 2014 review reported that vaping may trigger gum, mouth, and throat irritation. In particular, a 2015 study examined the effects of flavored e-juices on both human lung cells and lung cells in mice. Here’s what we currently know about the effects of vaping fluids with and without nicotine and vaping cannabis or CBD. In cultured human airway epithelial cells, both e-cigarette aerosol and CS extract induced IL-8/CXCL8 (neutrophil chemoattractant) release [28]. Researchers noted that study participants using both types of cigarettes had a higher nicotine dependence in relation to e-cigarettes. Rates of e-cigarette use among Cumberland students aren’t available, but across North Carolina, 21.4% of high school respondents to the state’s 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey said they currently vaped. The state’s rates are significantly higher than the national rates of 10% for high schoolers and 4.6% of middle schoolers, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey. The combo could raise your odds for lung cancer even higher, new research warns. But now that I’ve gotten rid of the endless, all-day vaping, and a nicotine hit makes me stink like a dive bar ashtray, makes my mouth taste like dirt, and makes my friends recoil from my presence, I’ve got reasons to cut back.
Vaping may also have specific adverse effects on certain groups, particularly young people. The full magnitude of effects of toxic e-cigarette ingredients may not be known for another three decades. Yale’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science received funding support for the study from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (U54DA036151), and the Center for Tobacco Products of the FDA. In the multivariate model (Table 3), results were similar for both girls and boys. S-EC remained higher for those planning for vocational education, and lower with liking school. Further, S-EC was higher with parental smoking, positive attitudes towards e-cigarette use in one’s age group, current smoking, and current snus use. Between-school differences were larger for girls (MOR 1.23) than boys (MOR 1.16). Educational aspirations were measured with ‘Where do you primarily want to go to study after comprehensive school?
Researchers in a 2018 study found that cinnamaldehyde (found in cinnamon), o-vanillin (found in vanilla), and pentanedione (found in honey) all had toxic effects on cells. Studies suggest that nicotine-free vaping can irritate the respiratory system, cause cell death, trigger inflammation, and harm blood vessels. A Yale study in 2019 found that, among students at three Connecticut public schools, those who used e-cigarettes were more likely to smoke regular cigarettes in the future. Most e-cigarettes have a battery, a heating element, and place to hold a liquid (such as a cartridge or pod). The e-liquid usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. As the user draws on the device, the battery heats the e-liquid to produce aerosol (not water vapor).
In this latter regard, no differences were encountered in the frequency of tumour appearance in rats subjected to long-term (2 years) inhalation of nicotine when compared with control rats [48]. Despite the lack of carcinogenicity evidence, it has been reported that nicotine promotes tumour cell survival by decreasing apoptosis and increasing proliferation [49], indicating that it may work as a "tumour enhancer". In a very recent study, chronic administration of nicotine to mice (1 mg/kg every 3 days for a 60-day period) enhanced brain metastasis by skewing the polarity of M2 microglia, which increases metastatic tumour growth [50]. Assuming that a conventional cigarette contains 0.172–1.702 mg of nicotine [51], the daily nicotine dose administered to these animals corresponds to 40–400 cigarettes for a 70 kg-adult, which is a dose of an extremely heavy smoker.
There's no evidence so far that vaping causes harm to other people around you. If you're pregnant, licensed NRT products such as patches and gum are the recommended option to help you stop smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) has been widely used for many years to help people stop smoking and is a safe treatment. In the UK, e-cigarettes are tightly regulated for safety and quality.

At that point, levels of formaldehyde exceeded limits set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), though other compounds didn’t come close. About a quarter of middle and high school students surveyed in 2017 said they had been around someone vaping at least once in the past 30 days. In 2021, only about 11 percent of high school students and 3 percent of middle school students surveyed said they had tried e-cigarettes. Results from a clinical trial published by JAMA Internal Medicine found that young adults ages who used This is Quitting from Truth had nearly 40% higher odds of quitting compared to a control group.

There is no single test for EVALI; it’s what is known as a "diagnosis of exclusion," which means that a doctor will conduct tests to rule out other potential diseases and conditions. The primary risk factor for EVALI is current or previous use of a vaping device. They can look like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, pens, USB flash drives, or may be in other forms. We fund research that explores how risk factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity can affect the development of cancer. For instance, 68 people died in an outbreak of vaping-related illness (EVALI) in 2019 and 2020. Other compounds that have been detected in aerosols include acetamide, a potential human carcinogen [5], and some aldehydes [69], although their levels were minimal. Interestingly, the existence of harmful concentrations of diethylene glycol, a known cytotoxic agent, in e-liquid aerosols is contentious with some studies detecting its presence [4, 68, 70,71,72], and others finding low subtoxic concentrations [73, 74]. In this regard, either it was detected at concentrations that did not exceed the authorised limit [73], or it was absent from the aerosols produced [4, 71, 72]. Only one study revealed its presence at high concentration in a very low number of samples [5]. Nevertheless, its presence above 1 mg/g is not allowed by the FDA [73]. Figure 1 lists the main compounds detected in aerosols derived from humectant heating and their potential damaging effects.

In light of these results, policymakers might want to consider other approaches to protect public health where tobacco is concerned, the authors wrote in the study. Of the increase in cigarette sales, 71% were of non-menthol cigarettes, suggesting that restrictions on menthol cigarettes would not counteract this effect. The primary outcome of interest was volume sales of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes per capita, during each four-week period, both overall and by type of flavor. Cigarette volumes are measured in packs, while e-cigarettes are standardized to 0.7-milliliter units, given past industry claims that one 0.7-milliliter vape pod is equivalent to 20 conventional cigarettes, or one pack.
In 2021 "other" flavored devices made up 71 percent of all disposable devices sold or given away, with the most-popular subcategories being fruit-flavored and fruit & menthol/mint flavored products. These two subcategories alone made up more than half of all disposable e-cigarette devices sold or given away in 2021. Researchers said that the study’s prospective observational design allows them to infer, but not conclusively determine, a causal relationship between e-cigarette use and heart failure. However, with its large sample size and detailed data on substance use and health information, Bene-Alhasan said the study is one of the most comprehensive studies to assess this relationship to date. This guide is intended to provide general information about the California Electronic Cigarette Excise Tax and registration, collection, filing, and payment responsibilities of retailers of electronic cigarettes containing or sold with nicotine. According to a 2018 study examining infrequent cannabis smoking in adults, vaping THC produced stronger mind-altering effects than smoking a similar amount of weed. However, nicotine alone is relatively harmless, and switching from daily tobacco smoking to daily e-cigarette use can be an important step for people to stop smoking completely. However, researchers found that only daily e-cigarette use had a statistically significant effect on smoking cessation rates. While there appears to be some consensus that vaping may be less harmful to health than tobacco cigarette smoking, the dangers of e-cigarettes remain unclear. The range of e-liquid flavours available to consumers is extensive and is used to attract both current smokers and new e-cigarette users, which is a growing public health concern [6]. In fact, over 5 million middle- and high-school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2019 [75], and appealing flavours have been identified as the primary reason for e-cigarette consumption in 81% of young users [76]. Since 2016, the FDA regulates the flavours used in the e-cigarette market and has recently published an enforcement policy on unauthorised flavours, including fruit and mint flavours, which are more appealing to young users [77].

While e-cigarette use prevalence has declined significantly since the heyday of JUUL — 10% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023 — e-cigarette use among young people remains a concern. Thousands of flavored, high-nicotine, and relatively cheap e-cigarette products remain on the market — many of them illegally — driving youth use and nicotine addiction. Equally concerning, nearly half of young people who have ever tried e-cigarettes continue to use them, and many do so daily. As encouraging as the data was a few years ago, it’s starting to look like that’s not the case. The FDA is yet to approve them as a smoking cessation aid and a recent CDC study found that most adult e-cigarette users — 58.8 percent of them — don't stop smoking cigarettes and instead wind up using both products. The few scientists actively trying to fill the gap in the research literature are running into obstacles.

The FDA does not currently require testing of all the substances in e-cigarettes to ensure they are safe. It's also hard to know exactly what chemicals are in an e-cigarette because most products do not list all of the harmful or potentially harmful substances contained in them. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, but many of them contain nicotine, which comes from tobacco. Because of this, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies them as "tobacco products." For adults who smoke, switching completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes may reduce exposure to many harmful chemicals present in cigarettes. However, it is important that they switch completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes to get the full health benefit.

Recent guidance from the Center for Tobacco Products indicates the importance of switching completely away from combustible cigarettes for those who are also using e-cigarettes," she added. The investigators revealed that daily vs nondaily use of e-cigarettes was linked to higher overall rates of quitting combustible cigarettes (12.8% vs 6.1%). The adults who used e-cigarettes in 2019 were more likely to stop smoking traditional cigarettes compared with those who used the e-cigarettes between 2014 and 2015 (12.0% vs 5.3%). There was limited evidence that flavor or device type impacted cigarette cessation. The findings suggest that daily e-cigarette use may help some patients to quit smoking combustible cigarettes.

Individuals can also seek cessation support by calling QUIT-NOW or ACS-2345.
Differences between schools exist, but having more students with no nicotine use showed protective associations, while having more students with positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group increased the susceptibility. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.
The FDA lists 93 harmful or potentially harmful chemicals found in regular cigarettes, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) describes cigarettes as having more than 7,000 chemicals in them. A 2021 study found that daily e-cigarette usage among tobacco smokers can increase the likelihood of quitting smoking eightfold. Researchers assessed data from the 2014–2019 Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study, focusing on smokers who were not planning to quit smoking at the start of the period. However, a 2019 study into the long-term health effects of vaping found that people using e-cigarettes had a higher risk of respiratory disease than people who never smoked. The authors first created a comprehensive database of tobacco product flavor prohibition and restriction laws across the United States, including both state and local statutes. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes.
The availability of "vape wear," such as backpacks and hoodies, also allow the user to vape while concealing the product. Cig-a-likes may also contain low levels of cadmium, a toxic metal also found in cigarette smoke that can cause breathing problems and disease.11 More research is needed on the health consequences of repeated exposure to these chemicals.
Even liquid nicotine spilled on the skin can be poisonous within minutes. A standard vape kit is usually an electronic cigarette - this usually consists of a battery and tank that allows you to fill it with e-liquid. But you can get many types of vapes, such as pod mods, sub-ohm kits, cigalikes, and many more. E-cigarettes are popular among teens and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2019, nearly 28 percent of high-school students and 11 percent of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. About 8 percent of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes in 2018. In 2019, nearly 28% of high-school students and 11% of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that generate an inhalable aerosol that usually contains nicotine. Minnesota teens are using e-cigarettes and vapes at alarming rates, exposing themselves to the harms of nicotine and risking addiction.
Some public health experts believe that e-cigarettes are an essential alternative to smoking tobacco that can help smokers quit. Others argue that e-cigarettes could be a route into nicotine addiction and point out that their long-term safety has not yet been proven. There are also those that believe that e-cigarettes may offer public health benefits but that e-cigarettes should be regulated, particularly when it comes to the marketing of such products.
However, when they looked at other scenarios, such as bar settings where many people were vaping, the researchers found that the concentration of toxins in the air was generally much higher than in residential settings. The more people were vaping and the higher voltages were used, the worse the air quality. In some scenarios, levels of both formaldehyde and acrolein were above OEHHA safety standards for bar employees. This article explains the toxins found in vaping aerosol, the factors affecting secondhand vaping, and potential health effects. MARIE — The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan has partnered with Truth Initiative to offer a first-of-its-kind free and anonymous text message quit vaping program through the This is Quitting for teens and young adults.

The Vital Records service window in the Lucas State Office Building will be closed on August 6-7 due to construction. As of April 1st, 2024, 1,061 municipalities, plus 26 states, commonwealths, and territories restrict e-cigarette use in 100% smokefree venues.
Long periods of dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes can result in harms to health similar to, or in addition to, the harms from exclusive use of cigarettes. Nicotine is the primary agent in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving.
From early 2024, stronger controls on the importation, manufacture, advertising, supply and commercial possession of all e‑cigarette devices and components (with and without nicotine) are being implemented by the Australian Government. These regulatory changes are being implemented by the Federal Government in stages during 2024 in partnership with State and Territory Governments (TGA 2023). Researchers said that the results show e-cigarettes may confer as much as or potentially even more harm to users and especially patients at risk for vascular disease. Results showed that total cholesterol and LDL or "bad" cholesterol was higher in sole e-cigarette users compared to nonsmokers.
Steer clear of unregulated mods unless you have lots of experience vaping and a decent knowledge of electronics. Like disposable vapes, these devices don't allow modification to the battery and heating element. The difference is that they're rechargeable and refillable, letting you swap in a fresh pod or cartridge of vape juice when the old one runs out.
And, our starter kits and disposable vape pens are a great, simple way to make the switch from smoking to vaping. We also have a wide selection of advanced kits for vapers who prefer high-powered cloud chasing e-cigs. Increasing consumer awareness of the environmental toxicity and dangers posed by discarding e-cigarette waste into landfills and encouraging vapers to quit are the best ways to protect the environment from tobacco product waste. Currently, there is no standardized way to recycle e-cigarettes in the U.S. Starting in 2019, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) began accepting e-cigarette devices and cartridges during their annual National Prescription Take Back Day, although the DEA cannot accept devices containing lithium ion batteries.

At the end of the survey, 28% of smokers using e-cigarettes daily had ceased smoking tobacco altogether, while 45.5% had ceased smoking tobacco daily. The AHA notes that while vaping liquids contain fewer contaminants than cigarettes, they are not entirely safe. Based on the available evidence, smoking appears more harmful than vaping, but this does not mean that vaping is safe.
Use of microporous ceramic as a wicking material improves heating efficiency, but how it affects the chemical emissions of these devices is unclear. We assessed the emissions of a pod e-cigarette with innovative ceramic wick-based technology and two flavoured e-liquids containing nicotine lactate and nicotine benzoate (57 and 18 mg mL−1 nicotine, respectively). Among the studied harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) listed by the US FDA and/or WHO TobReg, only 5 (acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, naphthalene and nornicotine) were quantified at levels of 0.14 to 100 ng puff−1. In the combustible cigarette (Kentucky reference 1R6F), levels were from 0.131 to 168 µg puff−1.
In Cumberland County, Chalmers McClain and Graham said the growing number of vape shops opening near schools with their colorful and bright lights to attract students is also part of the problem. For example, Ramsey Street Alternative High School has two vape shops within a six-minute walk from the school. Teacher concerns around increasing the suspension rates of students caught vaping on school property prompted the initial pilot and current implementation of CATCH My Breath into county schools, said Graham.
