The use of e-cigarettes has increased exponentially in recent years, and vaping has become preferred to traditional cigarette smoking among today’s young people and those looking for alternative to traditional tobacco and nicotine products. As use and availability of these products increases, reports have cast more light on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Here, Kenneth Uy, a health coach at Henry Ford Health, clarifies some information about these products and how their use can impact your health.
New 'pod-mod' style vape products are similar in shape and size to JUUL
According to the manufacturer, a single JUUL pod contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes. Although JUUL is currently the top-selling e-cigarette in the U.S., other e-cigarettes are becoming available that look like USB flash drives. Because of their shape, school teachers, administrators, and parents may not notice students using these devices in school, including in classrooms and bathrooms. Adults who use tobacco and are trying to quit should use proven quit tools, like group or phone counseling, paired with medications or nicotine replacement therapy patches, gum or lozenges. The agency says the sweet flavored e-liquids pose a "serious, well-documented risk" of enticing more young people to pick up a nicotine habit. In 2020, nearly 20% of high school students and almost 5% of middle-school students used e-cigarettes, and almost all of those kids used flavored products, the agency said in court documents.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing e-cigarette or vaping products was linked to most EVALI cases. Emergency department visits related to e-cigarette, or vaping, products have sharply declined in recent years, but the CDC continues to monitor reports. In 2022, e-cigarettes remained the most common tobacco product used by high school (16.5%) and middle school (4.5%) students in the last 30 days. And more than a quarter (27.6%) of current youth e-cigarette users say they use an e-cigarette product every day.
There are also reports of lung illnesses and deaths related to inhalation of certain vaping oils into the lungs, which have no way to filter out toxic ingredients. You might be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other nondisposable and disposable vaping devices) as a way to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, shares health information about vaping. Truth Initiative supports regulation that encourages the development of consistently safer nicotine delivery alternatives that allow smokers to quit tobacco altogether or switch completely to a much less harmful, well-regulated product.
Where e-cigarette flavor restrictions had been in effect for at least a year, sales of cigarette brands favored by adults went up by 10%, while sales of cigarette brands that disproportionately attract underage smokers saw a 20% bump. During the study period, hundreds of localities and seven states restricted or prohibited flavored e-cigarette sales. While these policies did reduce per-capita vape sales, they also substantially boosted cigarette sales. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes. In vaping liquids, nicotine and/or flavouring ingredients are dissolved in a liquid mixture.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a combination of counseling and medications as the best strategy for quitting smoking. Vaping companies have long claimed their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. The FDA has not authorized any flavored e-cigarette products and reports that it has denied marketing applications for millions of flavored products. E-cigarette companies have filed over 60 lawsuits challenging the FDA’s marketing denial orders. In addition, while the FDA denied marketing applications for all Juul products in June 2022, it subsequently put that decision on hold in the face of a lawsuit by Juul. When e-cigarette products first became popular, we didn’t have much information about health risks.
All this evidence would suggest that e-cigarettes are potentially less harmful than conventional cigarettes (Fig. 2) [11, 14, 22, 24, 27,28,29]. Importantly, however, most of these studies have investigated only short-term effects [10, 14, 15, 22, 27,28,29, 31, 32], and the long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption on human health are still unclear and require further study. Vapes come in colorful, fun, and unique product designs, along with many flavors, all of which come together as part of the attraction for youth who believe that these products are not addictive and are safe to use. Many users believe vaping will reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
The last wave analyzed took place during the COVID-19 pandemic in March to November 2021 and was administered via audio computer-assisted self-interviews and telephone interviews. The study featured 1,985 participants; 49.4% were male and the average age was 40. The patient population was 80.7% white, 11.4% Black, 9.2% Hispanic, and 8% of another race. Enrollees in the program receive interactive daily text messages tailored to their sign-up date or their target quit date if they set one. Program users who set a quit date (which they can change) receive messages for at least one week prior to the quit date and for at least two months following the quit date. Those brands have been sold in the U.S. for years, awaiting FDA action on their scientific applications. To stay on the market, companies must show that their e-cigarettes provide an overall health benefit for smokers, without significantly appealing to kids.
Do we really know the composition of the inhaled vapour during the heating process and its impact on health? In the present review, we have attempted to clarify these questions based on the existing scientific literature, and we have compiled new insights related with the toxicity derived from the use of these devices. With the rise in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette, e-cigs or vapes) and vaping use among youth, teens and young adults, the Health Department and our team are working to prevent initiation and reduce vaping of all substances in Vermont. As of 2021, 16% of Vermont high school students said they used e-cigarettes at least once in the past 30 days. Students who smoke cigarettes, tried flavored tobacco before age 13, binge drink or use cannabis vape at the highest rates.
The results showed that people who used e-cigarettes at any point were 19% more likely to develop heart failure compared with people who had never used e-cigarettes. In calculating this difference, researchers accounted for a variety of demographic and socioeconomic factors, other heart disease risk factors and participants’ past and current use of other substances, including alcohol and tobacco products. The researchers also found no evidence that participants’ age, sex or smoking status modified the relationship between e-cigarettes and heart failure. While teen smoking has fallen by 80% over the past 20 years, a new generation is now at risk of becoming addicted to nicotine — and possibly at risk for other serious health problems — through e-cigarettes. More than 2.5 million U.S. middle and high school students are now using e-cigarettes, with nearly 85% of them using flavored products.
The liquid solution can contain nicotine, flavorings, harmful chemicals, or other substances. Since the early 2000s TTCs have developed interests in e-cigarettes (also known as electronic cigarette australia delivery systems, or ENDS), heated tobacco products (HTPs), snus and nicotine pouches. Companies have referred to these types of product as ‘next generation products’ (NGPs) although terminology changes over time. Finally, the report discusses steps that e-cigarette companies took in 2021 to deter or prevent underage consumers from visiting their websites, signing up for mailing lists and loyalty programs, or buying e-cigarette products online. These steps include the use of online self-certification to verify users were at least 21 years old and following state laws requiring an adult signature upon delivery of e-cigarette products. The 2021 report also provides details on some characteristics of e-cigarette products, including flavors and nicotine concentration, as well as the bundling of the components in cartridge systems.

But e-cigarettes haven't proved to be safer or more effective than nicotine-replacement medications in helping people stop smoking. He was a founding member of the Society for Nicotine and Tobacco Research. As a public health researcher, he has studied numerous issues related to nicotine use and policy, with some recent work focused on cigarette and e-cigarette use among adolescents and young adults. Lynn T. Kozlowski is an internationally recognized expert on tobacco use, e-cigarettes and nicotine policy. He can speak to the media about these issues, including trends in both smoking and vaping (including Juuling). Fears that e-cigarettes have made smoking seem normal again or even led to people taking up tobacco smoking are not so far being realised based on the evidence assessed by this important independent review.
E-cigarettes are available in flavors like cherry, bubble gum, and cotton candy, and are allowed to be advertised on TV, which may increase their appeal for children and teens. As of July 31, 2024, Poison Centers have managed 4,955 e-cigarette and liquid nicotine related exposure cases. For more information about the health effects of e-cigarettes, visit CardioSmart.org/StopSmoking. People who use e-cigarettes are significantly more likely to develop heart failure compared with those who have never used them, according to one of the largest prospective studies to date investigating possible links between vaping and heart failure. The findings are being presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session.
Separate studies have shown that newer e-cigarettes may deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could explain the recent findings. The investigators acknowledged that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes. They noted that their study did not evaluate the risks of youth e-cigarette use. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used commercial tobacco product among youth,1 so it is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them.
Our experts provide care to both kids and adults with complex lung issues from all over Southern California and beyond. Teens today have access to more potentially misleading information than at any other time in history. They’re also bombarded by more sources of advertising than ever before.
Vaping products, "vapes" or "e-cigarettes", comprise a wide range of products that heat a substance to produce an aerosol that is inhaled. We link to further pages giving more detailed information about each company’s products, market share and business strategy, including methods used to promote their products around the world. We also point to examples of lobbying activity conducted by, and on behalf of, tobacco companies, in order to influence regulation around e-cigarettes. Some have rechargeable batteries and changeable prefilled cartridges; others are disposable after running out of charge or e-liquid. Reported sales of cartridge products increased from $2.133 billion in 2020 to $2.496 billion in 2021; sales of disposable, non-refillable e-cigarette products increased from $261.9 million in 2020 to $267.1 million in 2021. Bene-Alhasan also said e-cigarettes are not recommended as a tool to quit smoking, since many people may continue vaping long after they quit smoking.
There's no evidence so far that vaping causes harm to other people around you. If you're pregnant, licensed NRT products such as patches and gum are the recommended option to help you stop smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) has been widely used for many years to help people stop smoking and is a safe treatment. In the UK, e-cigarettes are tightly regulated for safety and quality.
While their manufacturers say they are an alternative for tobacco smokers who want to avoid inhaling smoke, critics say too little is known about the safety of ESDs because they are not regulated. All tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, pose a risk to the health of the user. Beginning smoking, switching to smoking, or reverting to smoking exposes the user to potentially devastating health effects.
During the Vietnam War, cigarettes were included with C-ration meals. In 1975, the U.S. government stopped putting cigarettes in military rations. During the second half of the 20th century, the adverse health effects of tobacco smoking started to become widely known and printed health warnings became common on cigarette packets. This health advisory is being issued by the State Health Officer to inform the public about the alarming statistics on current e-cigarette use among youth in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, current e-cigarette use among Wisconsin high school students increased 154% between 2014 and 2018.
"More research about the health effects of alternative tobacco products is critically needed to put science behind the regulation of the tobacco industry." As the debate blazes, deep-pocketed big tobacco investors are buying up e-cig companies, injecting millions of dollars into the market and banking on a bright future for the devices. More than 100 e-cigarette companies are now jockeying for the business of smokers and nonsmokers alike.
In Cumberland County, Chalmers McClain and Graham said the growing number of vape shops opening near schools with their colorful and bright lights to attract students is also part of the problem. For example, Ramsey Street Alternative High School has two vape shops within a six-minute walk from the school. Teacher concerns around increasing the suspension rates of students caught vaping on school property prompted the initial pilot and current implementation of CATCH My Breath into county schools, said Graham.
Dr. Amanda Graham, chief of innovations at Truth Initiative, said youth e-cigarette use remains a serious public health concern. Launched in January 2019, the This is Quitting program has amassed more than 750,000 enrolled to date and is designed for teens and young adults looking to quit e-cigarettes. Although advertising may make it look convenient and appealing, it’s important to know that these products deliver varying amounts of the addictive chemical nicotine, which can negatively impact your learning, attention span and proneness to addiction. Many teens are taking things a step further, adding cannabis, CBD oils and other dangerous additives to vaping devices. When patients show up to the emergency department in respiratory distress from vaping, it can be challenging for physicians to treat them due to the difficulty in correctly identifying what they inhaled, especially when they are intubated or unconscious. According to the FDA, e-cigarettes are devices that allow users to inhale an aerosol containing nicotine or other substances. Other studies show that newer e-cigarettes deliver higher doses of nicotine more efficiently, which could be a reason why these findings were observed. The authors acknowledge that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes and that their study did not evaluate risks of youth e-cigarette use. Over the next few years, the optimism over e-cigarettes waned as their popularity skyrocketed. Juul’s sales increased over 600 percent each year to become the best selling device on the market while I inhaled an atmosphere’s worth of vanilla vapor into my lungs.
However, the FDA then paused its decision in July while it carries out an additional review on the company's products. Many physical retail locations neglect to check identification for customers, allowing children to access the devices. Like cigarettes, an American must be at least 21 years old to purchase a vape. They can come as vape pens — which are shaped like a pen or small tube with a tank to store e-liquid and batteries — or pod systems that are rechargeable and often shaped like USB sticks.
You can influence their decision to quit vaping or choice not to use e-cigarettes. Protect their health and their future by equipping yourself with information for this important conversation. Health experts are concerned about the various chemical ingredients within e-cigarettes. Even though it is illegal to sell e-cigarettes and e-liquids containing nicotine in Victoria, there is no guarantee that products purchased will not contain nicotine. Research now shows that young people who initially use e-cigarettes, who have never smoked before, are 3 times more likely to take up tobacco smoking. That aerosol is often called ‘vapour’ and inhaling it from an e-cigarette is known as ‘vaping’.
NSW Health has launched a new mass media behaviour change campaign aiming to address the issue of vaping by young people. It can damage your heart, arteries, and lungs, increasing the risk for heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung disease. E-cigarettes recently surpassed conventional cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among youth.1 It is critical that public health officials and the general public understand the potential risks of using them. The FDA recently approved its first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers. In contrast to the clear evidence that flavored products fueled the youth e-cigarette epidemic, every major U.S. public health authority – including the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the CDC and even the FDA itself – has found there is inadequate evidence to conclude that e-cigarettes are effective at helping smokers quit. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices used for a type of smoking called vaping.
"Popcorn lung" is another name for bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), a rare condition that results from damage of the lungs’ small airways. BO was originally discovered when popcorn factory workers started getting sick. The culprit was diacetyl, a food additive used to simulate butter flavor in microwave popcorn.
Nicotine yields for different e-cigarette brands have been reported from 2 to 313 µg puff−1 while for conventional cigarettes smoke the values ranged from 170 to 232 µg puff−16,31,36,48,64. Nicotine poisoning refers to the toxic effects of consuming nicotine, a chemical in all tobacco products. A recent increase in poisonings is due to liquid nicotine, a product in the popular e-cigarette. Symptoms include vomiting, rapid heart rate, unsteadiness and increased salivation. The comprehensive review of the evidence finds that almost all of the 2.6 million adults using e-cigarettes in Great Britain are current or ex-smokers, most of whom are using the devices to help them quit smoking or to prevent them going back to cigarettes. It also provides reassurance that very few adults and young people who have never smoked are becoming regular e-cigarette users (less than 1% in each group).
The SKE Crystal Bar has an auto-shutoff that powers it down after 15 minutes, preventing it from overheating while idle. It also shuts down in response to a short circuit so that wiring or battery issues won't cause it to ignite. And its reverse polarity protection keeps the device from being damaged if the battery is improperly installed (though this shouldn't be an issue since it's a pre-assembled vape). We appreciate the elegant design of the SKE Crystal Bar, and it's got a reputation for delivering rich, long-lasting flavor.
With regards to toxicity, little is known about the effects of humectants when they are heated and chronically inhaled. Indeed, the latter study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a PG exposure of 430–603 mg/m3, which is higher than the levels reported to cause airway irritation (average 309 mg/m3) based on a human study [55]. The same study established that one e-cigarette puff results in a glycerol exposure of 348–495 mg/m3 [57], which is close to the levels reported to cause airway irritation in rats (662 mg/m3) [58]. Results from in vitro studies are in general agreement with the limited number of in vivo studies.
The data shows that in 2021, 69.2 percent of e-cigarette cartridges either sold or given away contained menthol-flavored e-liquids, and the rest were tobacco-flavored. E-cigarette companies also spent $90.6 million more advertising and promoting their products in 2021 than in 2020. Flavored e-cigarettes are very popular, especially among young people.
The length of time spent vaping can be much longer than smoking a standard cigarette. While most cigarettes are smoked within two to five minutes, e-cigarettes can last up to 20 minutes, delivering more nicotine and damaging chemicals to the lungs. In addition, some vaping mixtures can contain 20 times the nicotine that a single cigarette contains. This study builds on the findings of an earlier randomized clinical trial of This is Quitting conducted among roughly 2,600 young adults ages 18 to 24.

Population-level interventions to reduce tobacco use include price increases, mass media campaigns, and smoke-free policies that include e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes, also known as electronic smoking devices (ESD) and vaporizer cigarettes, are battery-operated devices that emit doses of nicotine and non-nicotine vaporized solutions that are inhaled.
"Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. "Even with the current relatively low use of e-cigarettes among adults – 3.7 percent – health care costs are already substantial, and likely to increase in the future if youth continue to use this product," said Max. "Vaping products containing nicotine are subject to federal laws that prohibit sales to people under the age of 21," said study co-author Sairam V. Jabba, D.V.M., Ph.D., a senior research scientist at Duke University School of Medicine. The 2022–2023 NDSHS had a series of questions regarding policy measures designed to address e‑cigarette use. Support increased for all e‑cigarette policy options among the Australian population (Figure 6).
Nicotine-free e-juice contains a number of potentially toxic chemicals, such as base liquids and flavoring agents. However, based on the experience with cigarettes, similar adverse health effects, including COPD, heart disease, and cancer, can be expected. Finally, a 2017 review of the cardiovascular effects of vaping indicates that e-cigarettes may pose certain risks to the heart and circulatory system, notably for people who already have some form of heart disease.
In addition to these laws, e-cigarettes are prohibited from being used in child care facilities, and people purchasing tobacco products have to pay a 15 percent tax. While not all the effects of smoking are immediate, the complications and damage can last for years. The good news is that quitting smoking can reduce many risk factors for the conditions and diseases below. For a long time, e-cigarettes and other electronic aerosolizers weren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They only came under the purview of the FDA in 2016, after they had been on the market for nearly a decade.
This mixture is typically made up of propylene glycol and/or glycerol (vegetable glycerin) and other chemicals. Flavouring ingredients include chemicals and blends of chemicals used to make different flavours. Disposable e-cigarettes are not covered by the flavor restrictions imposed by the Food and Drug Administration.
There's always a chance that the fail-safe could fail, though, which is why we don't consider these as safe as other vaping devices. The biggest risks in vaping devices come when you get into highly customizable "mods." These devices allow for lots of fine-tuning in terms of the internal electrical setup. But this added flexibility means more possibilities for health hazards. You'll have to be careful not to buy knock-off vape liquids with unhealthy contaminants, for one thing.
And, our starter kits and disposable vape pens are a great, simple way to make the switch from smoking to vaping. We also have a wide selection of advanced kits for vapers who prefer high-powered cloud chasing e-cigs. Increasing consumer awareness of the environmental toxicity and dangers posed by discarding e-cigarette waste into landfills and encouraging vapers to quit are the best ways to protect the environment from tobacco product waste. Currently, there is no standardized way to recycle e-cigarettes in the U.S. Starting in 2019, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) began accepting e-cigarette devices and cartridges during their annual National Prescription Take Back Day, although the DEA cannot accept devices containing lithium ion batteries.
A growing body of research indicates that truth campaigns to prevent young people from vaping are poised to move in the same direction as the organization’s successful smoking prevention campaigns. See " Quitting Tobacco " for more information on quitting tobacco products. Let's say you love the feel and flavor you get from puffing on a vape — but you can't quite bring yourself to trust that it's safe. The 2019 outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth. The amount, quantity and toxicity of substances that e-cigarettes release depend on several factors, such as the type of device, how the device operates and is used, and the e-liquid used. Drop the Vape also directs users to the New York State Quitline for free and confidential quit-coaching via telephone, internet, and text, and free starter kits of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for eligible New Yorkers. In absence of federal law, states are acting to remove flavored nicotine products from the shelves. All the e-cigarettes previously authorized by the FDA have been tobacco, which isn’t widely used by young people who vape.
In 2021 "other" flavored devices made up 71 percent of all disposable devices sold or given away, with the most-popular subcategories being fruit-flavored and fruit & menthol/mint flavored products. These two subcategories alone made up more than half of all disposable e-cigarette devices sold or given away in 2021. Researchers said that the study’s prospective observational design allows them to infer, but not conclusively determine, a causal relationship between e-cigarette use and heart failure. However, with its large sample size and detailed data on substance use and health information, Bene-Alhasan said the study is one of the most comprehensive studies to assess this relationship to date. This guide is intended to provide general information about the California Electronic Cigarette Excise Tax and registration, collection, filing, and payment responsibilities of retailers of electronic cigarettes containing or sold with nicotine. E-cigarette devices can be used to deliver marijuana and other drugs. Additionally, a study of adult smokers in Europe found those who vaped nicotine were less like to have stopped smoking than those who did not.
E-cigarettes may be disposable, be refillable with e-liquid, or have a prefilled cartridge or pod for reuse. Some e-cigarettes can also be used to deliver cannabis and other drugs. Additionally, high quality epidemiology studies consistently demonstrate that e-cigarettes use increases conventional cigarette uptake, particularly among non-smoking youth, by nearly 3 times. Evidence reveals that these products are harmful to health and are not safe. However, it is too early to provide a clear answer on the long-term impact of using them or being exposed to them.
Friday’s action is part of a sweeping FDA review intended to bring scientific scrutiny to the multibillion-dollar vaping market after years of regulatory delays. Currently the U.S. market includes thousands of fruit- and candy-flavored vapes that are technically illegal but are widely available in convenience stores, gas stations and vape shops. The CDC advises people who have asthma to avoid tobacco smoke, yet Minnesota teens who have asthma are more likely to breathe someone else’s tobacco smoke or e-cigarette aerosol than teens who do not have asthma. Minnesota’s teens who have asthma are less likely to be protected by rules against smoking in the family’s homes or vehicles. Individuals included from the PATH study were 21 years and older daily cigarette smokers and reported any use of e-cigarettes within the previous 30 days. The new study findings follow on the heels of a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) showing growing numbers of e-cigarette users.

With vaping, a device (typically a vape pen or a mod — an enhanced vape pen — that may look like a flash drive) heats up a liquid (called vape juice or e-liquid) until it turns into a vapor that you inhale. Electronic smoking devices or e-cigarettes are battery operated devices used to inhale a vaporized liquid solution that frequently contain nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. E-cigarettes are devices that heat a liquid, called e-liquid, into an aerosol that the user can inhale.
