Federal, state, and/or local governments need to set clear standards on environmentally responsible e-cigarette waste disposal and hold the industry accountable for adhering to them. E-cigarette manufacturers introduced a new tobacco product that soared in popularity with little thought on how to responsibly dispose of the resulting tons of e-cigarette waste. The group then performed a statistical analysis to determine group differences in vascular function before and after vaping.

In addition, 5 of the 11 vapours tested (including 4 that were cytotoxic) reduced HUVEC proliferation and one of them increased the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) [24]. Three of the most cytotoxic vapours—with effects similar to those of conventional high-nicotine CS extracts—also caused comparable morphological changes [24]. Endothelial cell migration is an important mechanism of vascular repair than can be disrupted in smokers due to endothelial dysfunction [25, 26]. E-cigarettes are sometimes called e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, e-hookahs, and electronic nicotine delivery systems or ENDS.

A Foundation-led study presented at the 2024 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco annual meeting found that monthly e-cigarette sales in California declined by 41% after statewide restrictions on the sale of flavored tobacco products took effect. However, the report also noted that the tobacco industry continues to market products to offset these declines, including non-menthol cigarettes that contain other cooling chemicals. Continuing to monitor flavored tobacco product sales is key to assessing policies like these and informing further policy development and implementation. Toxicity is not the only factor in considering risk to an individual or a population from exposure to ENDS emissions.

Other compounds that have been detected in aerosols include acetamide, a potential human carcinogen [5], and some aldehydes [69], although their levels were minimal. Interestingly, the existence of harmful concentrations of diethylene glycol, a known cytotoxic agent, in e-liquid aerosols is contentious with some studies detecting its presence [4, 68, 70,71,72], and others finding low subtoxic concentrations [73, 74]. In this regard, either it was detected at concentrations that did not exceed the authorised limit [73], or it was absent from the aerosols produced [4, 71, 72]. Only one study revealed its presence at high concentration in a very low number of samples [5]. Nevertheless, its presence above 1 mg/g is not allowed by the FDA [73]. Figure 1 lists the main compounds detected in aerosols derived from humectant heating and their potential damaging effects.
Heating the liquid (e-juices) causes formation of an aerosol which users inhale into their lungs. From early 2024, stronger controls on the importation, manufacture, advertising, supply and commercial possession of all e‑cigarette devices and components (with and without nicotine) are being implemented by the Australian Government. These regulatory changes are being implemented by the Federal Government in stages during 2024 in partnership with State and Territory Governments (TGA 2023). Taken together, the studies provide strong evidence that an interactive, tailored text message program can help teens and their older peers break free from nicotine addiction. These findings are especially important given the recent youth mental health crisis documented by the U.S. Adolescents in this study were characterized by high severity of past-year problems with depression, sleep, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. Truth Initiative forcefully rejects, however, the notion that this requires the further development of a huge commercial market in addictive nicotine products focused on growth and the acquisition of new users, most of whom are youth and young adults. Because the youth e-cigarette crisis in the United States and the youth appeal of flavored e-cigarettes go hand in hand, Truth Initiative strongly supports removing all flavored e-cigarettes from the market, regardless of device type. Based on the evidence already collected, the question shouldn’t be whether e-cigarettes are less dangerous than cigarettes, Christiani says, but whether vaping can be very harmful to health too. "To protect public health, I discourage the use of vaping—even to quit smoking," he stresses.
