Glyoxal is considered mutagenic, while the related compound methylglyoxal has been identified as a metabolite during glycolysis and is thus naturally present in the body. Methylglyoxal is also present in foods and drinks such as honey and coffee.

Surgeon General’s office began the work of awareness when the nation’s doctor, Jerome Adams, MD, issued a warning that vaping among youth has reached epidemic levels. This module provides an understanding of the inner workings of e-cigarettes, the content of the aerosols they produce, and thirdhand smoke.

However, a single e-cigarette can be harmful to the body’s blood vessels — even when the vapor is entirely nicotine-free — according to a new study by researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Tobacco products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development as teens grow. Rural youth are at higher risk for harm, because they tend to begin using tobacco products at a younger age and use tobacco products more frequently. Products like e-cigarettes, vapes, and e-hookahs typically contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development as teens grow.

Other studies suggest that while using e-cigarettes sends pollutants into the air, the concentration of these toxins drops quickly after someone stops vaping (much faster than cigarette smoke), but that doesn’t mean that the risk has gone away. Some, for example, will settle on surfaces, such as carpets or furniture, where small children might touch them or inadvertently ingest them when placing contaminated objects in their mouths.

Based on the current literature, it seems that several factors have led to the success of e-cigarette use as a smoking cessation tool. First, some e-cigarette flavours positively affect smoking cessation outcomes among smokers [102]. Second, e-cigarettes have been described to improve smoking cessation rate only among highly-dependent smokers and not among conventional smokers, suggesting that the individual degree of nicotine dependence plays an important role in this process [97]. Third, the general belief of their relative harmfulness to consumers' health compared with conventional combustible tobacco [103]. And finally, the exposure to point-of-sale marketing of e-cigarette has also been identified to affect the smoking cessation success [96].
"When you are out and about with your children and see an advertisement, for example, take the opportunity to talk about it," she says. As they grow older, parents can expand on their thoughts and expectations. "It’s also important to give teens and young adults the space to ask questions," she says. The 2023 NYTS showed that about 2 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the last 30 days. Another study that year found that the rates of youth who say they vaped with nicotine in the past month more than doubled in two years. About 11% of high school seniors reported this habit in 2017, compared to 25%, or one in four seniors, in 2019.
Kasza's group also pointed to dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes, which has increased over time and usually involves smoking cigarettes more frequently than using e-cigarettes. "Individuals who dual use remain exposed to cigarette smoking toxicants, making complete rather than partial substitution of cigarettes with e-cigarettes important for risk reduction," they wrote. "Indeed, healthcare clinicians are now encouraged to discuss e-cigarettes as a cessation tool with patients who smoke cigarettes and have already tried FDA-approved cessation medications." A comparison of the serum levels of nicotine from e-cigarette or conventional cigarette consumption has been recently reported [39].
The harms of e-cigarette use in young people include not only the deleterious effects of nicotine, but also exposure of the lungs and airways to potentially toxic solvents and flavoring chemicals. The rapidly rising rates of use in young people and the high rates of daily use strongly suggest that many are addicted to nicotine and will have difficulty in stopping use of all tobacco products. One study found that people who use only e-cigarettes increase their risk of developing lung disease by about 30% compared with nonusers. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are devices used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.

If the base nicotine mixture is not palatable, many flavors, such as mint, apple and others, can make vaping attractive, especially to adolescents. "We also did not see evidence that teens who quit vaping transitioned to smoking," added Graham. The text message intervention tested in this study is called This is Quitting, now part of the EX Program from Truth Initiative.
Advertisements for vapes are also restricted in youth-centered areas like parks. Meanwhile, California was the least popular state for youth vaping, as just six percent of teens had picked up the habit. In the 2021 Youth National Tobacco Survey, 73.5% of youth that use social media reported seeing e-cigarette–related content.
Despite that, e-cigarettes are more popular among U.S. teens than any other form of tobacco. Electronic cigarettes are battery powered devices that people use to heat liquid into a vapor that can be inhaled. Some studies have shown that vaping by some youth may be linked to later use of regular cigarettes and other tobacco products. Using e-cigarettes may play a part in some kids or teens wanting to use other, more harmful tobacco products. Although the term "vapor" may sound harmless, the aerosol that comes out of an e-cigarette is not water vapor and can be harmful. The aerosol from an e-cigarette can contain nicotine and other substances that are addictive and can cause lung disease, heart disease, and cancer.
Meanwhile, some influential conservatives are calling for the Trump administration to hold back on its plans to ban flavored tobacco. They argue such a move would hurt small vape business owners and people trying to quit smoking. Many governments impose restrictions on smoking tobacco, especially in public areas. The primary justification has been the negative health effects of second-hand smoke.[124] Laws vary by country and locality. She encourages parents to talk openly and freely about vaping—with the caveat that they provide accurate information. "I think the problem is that parents lose credibility if they say something to try and convince their child, who then finds out that it isn’t true," she says. The inhalation of harmful chemicals can cause irreversible lung damage and lung diseases.
Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. The tobacco use landscape in the United States and Minnesota is evolving. E-cigarettes are rapidly increasing in popularity, especially among youth. However, products like cigarettes and smokeless tobacco continue to have a stronger hold in rural areas due to decades of targeted marketing by the tobacco industry, which integrated tobacco use into rural culture.
Researchers noted that they were unable to assess any association between e-cigarette nicotine formulation and cigarette cessation outcomes. Another potential limitation was that the study only included adult participants who reported smoking within the previous 30 days, limiting information about younger smokers and former smokers. In that same vein, 5.9 million people began vaping, bringing the total use of tobacco products among those 12 and older to 64.4 million.

In contrast, people living in the most advantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to use e‑cigarettes but not smoke regular cigarettes (6.6%) (Figure 4). Young people aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to have used e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023, with almost 1 in 2 (49%) having used them at least once in their lifetime, and over 1 in 5 (21%) currently using e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023. More information on young people’s use of vapes and e-cigarettes can be found online.
However, the leading causes of nicotine poisoning are smokeless tobacco products (chew and snuff) and liquid nicotine that’s used in e-cigarettes. Chewing and snorting tobacco releases more nicotine into the body than smoking. E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting. Local stop smoking services should look to support e-cigarette users in their journey to quitting completely.

Experts have long suspected it, but a new study confirms that folks who vape and smoke tobacco face higher risks for lung cancer than if they'd done either alone. Propylene glycol, for example, is usually eaten (in cupcakes, soft drinks and salad dressings) or slathered onto the body (in soaps, shampoos and antiperspirants)—not breathed into the lungs. Many things that can be safely eaten—such as flour—can damage the lungs when inhaled. "We have little information about what happens to propylene glycol in the air," the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says on its Web site.
Similarly, a 2014 review reported that vaping may trigger gum, mouth, and throat irritation. In particular, a 2015 study examined the effects of flavored e-juices on both human lung cells and lung cells in mice. Here’s what we currently know about the effects of vaping fluids with and without nicotine and vaping cannabis or CBD. In cultured human airway epithelial cells, both e-cigarette aerosol and CS extract induced IL-8/CXCL8 (neutrophil chemoattractant) release [28]. Following the Golden State, Washington had the second-lowest amount of youth vapers, at eight percent. In the Evergreen state, the legal age to purchase vapes is 21, and there is a ban on all flavored varieties. Last year, Alaska Senate President Gary Stevens, a Republican, introduced Senate Bill 89, aimed at imposing the state's first-ever tax on e-cigarette products. Wyoming had the highest rate of youth vapers, with 30 percent of kids under 18 reporting they had used e-cigarettes in 2023.
Of note, the abstinence rate found in the nicotine-replacement group was lower than what is usually expected with this therapy. Nevertheless, the incidence of throat and mouth irritation was higher in the e-cigarette group than in the nicotine-replacement group (65.3% vs. 51.2%, respectively). Also, the participant adherence to the treatment after 1-year abstinence was significantly higher in the e-cigarette group (80%) than in nicotine-replacement products group (9%) [100]. These data overall indicate that the harmful effects of nicotine should not be underestimated. Despite the established regulations, some inaccuracies in nicotine content labelling remain in different brands of e-liquids.
The decision to pursue a smoking cessation objective, even in such a controlled form, should be made only after considering national circumstances, along with the risk of uptake and after exhausting other proven cessation strategies. Both smoking and vaping involve heating a substance and inhaling the resulting fumes. With vaping, a device (typically a vape pen or a mod — an enhanced vape pen — that may look like a flash drive) heats up a liquid (called vape juice or e-liquid) until it turns into a vapor that you inhale. utah electronic cigarette distribution laws smoking devices or e-cigarettes are battery operated devices used to inhale a vaporized liquid solution that frequently contain nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. Because the liquid solution is converted into an aerosol vapor, e-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping," rather than smoking. E-cigarettes are devices that heat a liquid, called e-liquid, into an aerosol that the user can inhale.
"One of the real problems [with] these things is that because of the low quality control, you never quite know what you are getting," he says. Those who support minimal regulation contend that limiting the use of e-cigarettes would encourage more people to smoke conventional cigarettes. Wild WestAs scientists struggle to test the safety of e-cigarettes, the devices are becoming more and more popular among teens and preteens. E-cigarette use among U.S. high school students more than doubled from 4.7 percent in 2011 to 10 percent in 2012, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Youth Tobacco Survey. The voltage ranges from 2.2 to 3.1 V and is not adjustable by the user. The device has dimensions (h × w × d) of 104.2 × 19.1 × 10.5 mm and a power output of 6.5 ± 0.5 W. The cartridges or pods consist of a plastic case holding the ceramic wick material and a flat metal heating element (NiCr, 0.8 –1.4-Ω resistance). Each pod is pre-filled with Vype e-liquid (1.9 mL) and is magnetically attached to the device.

As e-cigarettes deliver flavorings, additives, and, typically, nicotine through an inhaled aerosol, they are harmful to both the user and those who are exposed secondhand.
Freebase nicotine products can be used in refill liquids or in cartridges for closed systems. Because the brain experiences significant development during adolescence, nicotine use during this critical time can rewire the brain which can make it easier for youth to get addicted to other substances due to issues with impulse control. This video is about e-cigarettes and the emerging threat faced by rising youth use rates from Tobacco Control Network (TCN), Luci Longoria, and Dr. Brian King, FDA's Center for Tobacco Products Director. In addition, young adults were significantly more likely to use both cigarettes and e-cigarettes than adults 45 and older.
