In Cumberland County, Chalmers McClain and Graham said the growing number of vape shops opening near schools with their colorful and bright lights to attract students is also part of the problem. For example, Ramsey Street Alternative High School has two vape shops within a six-minute walk from the school. Teacher concerns around increasing the suspension rates of students caught vaping on school property prompted the initial pilot and current implementation of CATCH My Breath into county schools, said Graham.
Vapor products have many names, including electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), JUULs or vape pens. All adults who smoke conventional cigarettes or other combustible (burned) tobacco products should be advised to quit smoking at the earliest opportunity, recognizing that quitting is hard and often takes repeated, dedicated efforts. Individuals can also seek cessation support by calling QUIT-NOW or ACS-2345.
Nicotine levels ranged 0.10–0.32 mg puff−1 across the 3 study products. From the 19 proposed HPHCs specifically of concern in e-cigarettes, only 3 (glycerol, isoamyl acetate and propylene glycol) were quantified. As crucial as it is to health to quit smoking conventional cigarettes, it is unwise, as a rule, to take up vaping as a substitute, Christiani emphasizes.
It can also reduce fertility, increase the chance of developing type 2 diabetes, and contribute to bone loss. Even people who "smoke but don’t inhale" face an increased risk of mouth cancer. By Robyn Correll, MPHCorrell holds a master of public health degree and has over a decade of experience working in the prevention of infectious diseases. Researchers spent decades studying the health consequences of secondhand smoke. It might be a while before we have a clear picture of how secondhand vaping can impact a person’s long-term health, especially for young children.
Aug. 9, 2023, News Staff — New CDC data suggest that e-cigarette use is becoming more popular among young adults, even as their use of tobacco decreases. Freebase nicotine is nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture, typically propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, and other chemicals such as flavouring ingredients. E-cigarettes contain nicotine and lithium batteries, making them hazardous waste.
As with high school students, e-cigarette use was much more common than cigarette use. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can also be called e-cigs, e-hookahs, vapes, vape pens, personal diffusers or diffuser sticks. But one vape can contain the equivalent of 50 cigarettes of nicotine in the one product. They also contain a complex combination of chemicals including nicotine, nickel, tin, arsenic, chlorine and lead. These substances can be harmful to the body, with different flavourings helping to mask these poisons when they are taken into the body. An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a battery-operated device that heats liquid nicotine, flavoring, and other additives to create an aerosol.
All this evidence would suggest that e-cigarettes are potentially less harmful than conventional cigarettes (Fig. 2) [11, 14, 22, 24, 27,28,29]. Importantly, however, most of these studies have investigated only short-term effects [10, 14, 15, 22, 27,28,29, 31, 32], and the long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption on human health are still unclear and require further study. Vapes come in colorful, fun, and unique product designs, along with many flavors, all of which come together as part of the attraction for youth who believe that these products are not addictive and are safe to use. Many users believe vaping will reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
Youth ENDS use raises concerns about nicotine addiction, negative effects of nicotine on adolescent brain development, and other potential health harms, including increased risk of initiating cigarette smoking. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also called electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, or vape pens, are battery-powered devices used to smoke or "vape" a flavored or unflavored solution which usually contains nicotine. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recognizes the increased use of ENDS, especially among youth and young adults, as well as its use by those attempting to quit smoking tobacco. Although e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, for regulatory purposes, they are considered "tobacco products" by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). E-cigarettes can go by different names, including vapes, vape pens or sticks, e-hookahs, hookah sticks, mods, and personal vaporizers.
I never kidded myself into thinking that this habit was harmless, but my conviction that they were less harmful than cigarettes made the endeavor seem worthwhile, even praiseworthy. A May analysis found that vaping increases the risk of asthma by 200 percent and previous studies have linked the products to lung cancer, respiratory conditions, lung disease and organ damage. It’s still not clear how the toxins found in vaping can affect the health of non-vapers, especially long-term. The limited research available so far has largely focused on immediate health effects.
And using overly high temperatures could increase the stress on your lungs. Long-term users may not want to keep buying new vapes every time, though, as we touch on in our article on the best 0 nicotine rechargeable vapes. This is known as "dual use." The dual use of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes can lead to significant health risks because smoking any amount of regular cigarettes is very harmful. People should not use both products at the same time and are strongly encouraged to completely stop using all tobacco products. Beyond the three main ingredients, some researchers worry about by-products from heating electronic cigarettes and the solution inside them.
Television advertisements for cigarettes have been banned in the U.S. since 1971, but in the past few years supposedly healthier, battery-powered alternatives have landed numerous prime-time appearances. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, as they are known, soaked up the spotlight in recent Super Bowl commercials, on late-night talk shows and in a comedy sketch during the 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Indeed, a recent survey shows that nearly 60 percent of Americans are now familiar with the sleek, smokeless devices.
According to Blaha, there are three reasons e-cigarettes may be particularly enticing to young people. Second, e-cigarettes have a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes. State and local authorities can restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes.
E-Cigarettes, also called personal vaporizers or "vapes", present another way for smokers to ingest nicotine. E-Cigarettes have been marketed to young adults and adolescents through the use of candy and fruit flavors. They are also touted by some users as a "safer" alternative to smoking, and as a way to either quit smoking cigarettes, or to smoke in places where cigarette smoking is not allowed.
This ban builds upon legislation signed in July by Governor Cuomo that immediately banned the use of e-cigarettes on all public and private school grounds in New York State. The CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) developed this presentation to educate youth on e-cigarettes, including the health risks, the factors that lead to e-cigarette use, and what youth can do to avoid all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. This resource is intended for adults who educate or serve youth ages (teachers, youth ministers, coaches, scout leaders, etc.). Utilizing the talking points and information for the users' document, the presenter does not require additional information, nor permission to deliver the presentation. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items. Larger devices, such as tank systems or "mods," do not look like other tobacco products.
A 2016 report indicated that many vape fluids contain flavoring agents at concentrations that may pose risks to users. It carries the same health risks as vaping with any other e-cigarette brand. There’s limited evidence to date of the long-term effects of vaping because we know the lung effects of vaping will take decades to develop.
Here we address some of the common questions people ask about e-cigarettes. ENDS may be manufactured to look like conventional combusted cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Larger devices, such as tank systems or mods, bear little or no resemblance to cigarettes.
E-cigarettes can help people stop smoking and are an effective stop smoking tool. There’s no safe level of smoking, so it is important to stop tobacco-use completely. Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. First PuffsThe current iteration of e-cigarettes was invented and popularized by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and entered the U.S. market some seven years ago. Familydoctor.org, the Academy’s patient-facing web resource, has additional materials on tobacco addiction, the harms of vaping and several related topics. Young adults with family incomes of less than 200% of the federal poverty level also were more likely to use e-cigarettes than those with greater family income.
This is why it took as long as it did for the negative health effects of cigarettes to be widely recognized. There is abundant evidence that e-cigarettes can help some individuals to quit smoking, so they should be more widely recommended as smoking cessation aids. Vaping and smoking share similar negative effects on the body, such as damage to the lungs and increased cancer risk.
Nearly five times as many high school students use e-cigarettes than smoke cigarettes. The particle matter (PM) that is emitted by e-cigarettes is also potentially dangerous to those who inhale it, just as passive smoking is harmful to those who share a contained space with regular smokers. Nicotine is a poison which is particularly dangerous if ingested (swallowed or inhaled) by young children which has led to poisoning and even death when swallowed by infants. It is also highly addictive and use by teenagers can have a long-term effect on the development of the brain, which continues until the age of 25 years.
The association between student- and school-level factors and susceptibility to smoking. Nationally, e-cigarette use among high school students doubled from 11.7% in 2017 to 27.5% in 2019. The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. IPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be difficult to isolate directly from a patient. A.C.—managed the analytical testing programme and co-authored the manuscript.
If you think this is why your child vapes, talk to them about healthier ways to stay at a healthy weight or lose weight. Scientists are still learning about the health effects of being exposed to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol. The FDA monitors the national usage rates for all tobacco products, including an annual youth survey, and has seen a drastic increase in youth use of e-cigarette products in recent years.
They found that kids who used e-cigs were more likely than non-users to smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products over the next year. To study the short-term impacts of vaping, the researchers performed MRI exams on 31 healthy, non-smoking adults before and after vaping a nicotine-free e-cigarette. Comparing the pre- and post-MRI data, the single episode of vaping resulted in reduced blood flow and impaired endothelial function in the large (femoral) artery that supplies blood to the thigh and leg. The endothelium, which lines the inside surface of blood vessels, is essential to proper blood circulation. Once the endothelium is damaged, arteries thicken, and blood flow to the heart and the brain can be cut off, resulting in heart attack or stroke.
This includes the biennial WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, which tracks the status of the tobacco epidemic and interventions to combat it and other relevant resources. Because of the lack of long-term data and the fact that patients have died from EVALI, the prognosis for those affected remains uncertain. Researchers are working hard to learn as much as possible about the illness, its causes, and the odds for making a full recovery. "We recommend that patients see a pulmonologist within one to two weeks after being discharged to undergo testing of lung function and pulse oximetry [level of oxygen in the blood]," she says.
According to the CDC, 15% of EVALI patients were less than 18 years old. In addition, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vapor may contain the chemicals or substances listed below. Research from The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 reveals thousands of chemical ingredients in vape products, most of which are not yet identified. Among those the team could identify were several potentially harmful substances, including caffeine, three chemicals never previously found in e-cigarettes, a pesticide and two flavorings linked with possible toxic effects and respiratory irritation. "These cases appear to predominantly affect people who modify their vaping devices or use black market modified e-liquids. This is especially true for vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha. The American Lung Association will continue to urge FDA and Congress to remove all flavored tobacco products from the marketplace.
One study detected vitamin E acetate in the lung fluid of 48 out of 51 EVALI patients sampled across 16 states. By contrast, lung fluid samples taken from healthy people did not contain the vitamin. EVALI is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. The smoke-free and tobacco-free policies at schools, businesses, healthcare institutions, and other organizations should also cover e-cigarettes. This will help non-users avoid being exposed to potentially harmful e-cigarette aerosol.
Nicotine-free e-juice contains a number of potentially toxic chemicals, such as base liquids and flavoring agents. However, based on the experience with cigarettes, similar adverse health effects, including COPD, heart disease, and cancer, can be expected. Finally, a 2017 review of the cardiovascular effects of vaping indicates that e-cigarettes may pose certain risks to the heart and circulatory system, notably for people who already have some form of heart disease.

For smokeless tobacco (snus) use and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use, the associations with SEP have been mixed [7, 9, 10]. The scientists investigated the effect of the e-liquids on cells called endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels.
According to the study, 40.1% of 1,018 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 29 surveyed said they refilled devices not intended to be refilled and 35.8% recharged the battery of vaping pods meant to be thrown out after one use. Others reported mixing nicotine and cannabis liquids in devices designed only for nicotine. The decision lends new credibility to vaping companies’ longstanding claim that their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. Some of the harmful substances emitted in secondhand e-cigarette aerosols are similar to those in secondhand tobacco smoke.
Collectively, these devices are known as electronic nicotine delivery systems. E-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping" and the aerosol created from their use referred to as "vapor." E-cigarettes come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, highlighters, or toys. Just like people around smokers can breathe in cigarette smoke, it’s possible to breathe in e-cigarette aerosol if you’re around someone vaping. This is called secondhand vaping, and there isn't a lot of published research yet on how inhaling this aerosol affects the body, especially among adolescents. If you spend time around someone who vapes, you might be wondering if you can get secondhand smoke from a vape. While there's still a lot we don’t know about the harms of secondhand vaping, research suggests that bystanders who breathe in the aerosol might be exposed to many of the same toxins found in e-cigarettes and even some found in traditional tobacco. Levels below the LOD or LOQ, or even below the threshold levels proposed by the AFNOR standard guidelines, provide evidence of the optimal operation conditions (e.g., adequate wick saturation without extreme coil heating) of the ceramic wick-based device. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices designed to deliver nicotine and/or other substances including, in some cases, flavourings. Although e-cigarettes were first proposed in 1927 by Joseph Robinson1, it was only in the early 2000s that the 1st generation of e-cigarettes or ‘cig-a-likes’ became commercially available2,3,4. Subsequent generations of devices have evolved since then, ranging from e-cigarettes with prefilled or refillable cartridges (2nd generation) to rechargeable tank-style devices (3rd generation) with modifiable or ‘‘Mods’’ components3,4,5,6. The 4th generation of devices, known as ‘Pods’, has been driven by advances in electronic atomization technology3,7,8,9.

As such, it is imperative that e-cigarette cessation programs focused on adolescents are developed, evaluated, and implemented," Halpern-Felsher wrote. "This may point to the changing norms around e-cigarette use and the fact that quitting vaping among young people is becoming more normative and accepted," she said. Most of the study participants, about 87%, reported that they had tried to quit in the previous year, and about 94% reported feeling somewhat or very addicted to vaping. E-cigarettes usage by adolescents has become an epidemic according to the American Lung Association–20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years.
Even liquid nicotine spilled on the skin can be poisonous within minutes. A standard vape kit is usually an electronic cigarette - this usually consists of a battery and tank that allows you to fill it with e-liquid. But you can get many types of vapes, such as pod mods, sub-ohm kits, cigalikes, and many more. We have a wide range of vape kits available, whether you’re looking for a refillable pod vape, a heated tobacco product or a prefilled pod kit.
While e-cigarette use prevalence has declined significantly since the heyday of JUUL — 10% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023 — e-cigarette use among young people remains a concern. Thousands of flavored, high-nicotine, and relatively cheap e-cigarette products remain on the market — many of them illegally — driving youth use and nicotine addiction. Equally concerning, nearly half of young people who have ever tried e-cigarettes continue to use them, and many do so daily. As encouraging as the data was a few years ago, it’s starting to look like that’s not the case. The FDA is yet to approve them as a smoking cessation aid and a recent CDC study found that most adult e-cigarette users — 58.8 percent of them — don't stop smoking cigarettes and instead wind up using both products. The few scientists actively trying to fill the gap in the research literature are running into obstacles.
In contrast, other studies found acute microvascular endothelial dysfunction, increased oxidative stress and arterial stiffness in smokers after exposure to e-cigarettes with nicotine, but not after e-cigarettes without nicotine (reviewed in [20]). In women smokers, a study found a significant difference in stiffness after smoking just one tobacco cigarette, but not after use of e-cigarettes (reviewed in [20]). However, research updates on, and analysis of, the potential health benefits/risks of e-cigarettes are outside the scope of TobaccoTactics. These devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as pictured below, with several different names. Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, but many resemble pens or USB flash drives, and are not recognized as tobacco products. Larger e-cigarettes such as tank systems, or "mods," do not resemble other tobacco products.
Recent guidance from the Center for Tobacco Products indicates the importance of switching completely away from combustible cigarettes for those who are also using e-cigarettes," she added. The investigators revealed that daily vs nondaily use of e-cigarettes was linked to higher overall rates of quitting combustible cigarettes (12.8% vs 6.1%). The adults who used e-cigarettes in 2019 were more likely to stop smoking traditional cigarettes compared with those who used the e-cigarettes between 2014 and 2015 (12.0% vs 5.3%). There was limited evidence that flavor or device type impacted cigarette cessation. The findings suggest that daily e-cigarette use may help some patients to quit smoking combustible cigarettes.
I can go for six months at a time without catching a nasty, lingering cough. My clothing doesn’t reek of smoke all of the time and my car actually smells nice. So, though they are far from perfect, I am enjoying the changes that not smoking cigarettes has brought to my life. "Since there is no safe tobacco product, eventual abstinence from all tobacco products is the end goal," says Dr. Hyland, who is senior author on the new work. Adults in the U.S. who used e-cigarettes daily and also smoked combustible cigarettes were more likely to quit smoking than those who smoked but used e-cigarettes less frequently. Justice announced the task force that they say will address the illegal domestic distribution and sale of electronic cigarettes.
One chemical, known as 6-methyl nicotine, has been shown in rodent experiments to be far more potent than nicotine in targeting the brain’s nicotine receptors and more toxic than nicotine. Smoking harms nearly every organ in the body ― heart and blood vessel disease; lung disease; cancer (almost anywhere in your body); and impacts to your bones, eyes, teeth, gums, fertility and pregnancy. Individual businesses can prohibit the use of vape devices indoors but this is not required by state law. More adults 18 to 24 years old used e-cigarettes (11.0%, or roughly 3.4 million people) compared with adults 25 to 44 (6.5%) or 45 and older (2.0%). The latest research, published in a July National Center for Health Statistics data brief, shows that in 2021, e-cigarette use was highest among adults 18 to 24 years old.
As one addiction expert has said, "The modern cigarette does to nicotine what crack does to cocaine." Pax Labs discovered that by adding benzoic acid to nicotine salts, which occur naturally in tobacco, they could mimic a cigarette’s rapid nicotine delivery. Both British American Tobacco Plc and Altria are prodding the FDA for heightened enforcement on "illicit" synthetic nicotine electronic cigarettes in the U.S. vaping market. The companies have estimated those synthetic products represent about half of the overall domestic e-cigarette market.
This guidance is intended to support healthcare providers in their understanding and tracking of -cigarette and vaping product use. 20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years. Additional data, rates and trends can be found in the American Lung Association’s Tobacco Trends Brief.
Cigarette smoking is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in this country, killing nearly five hundred thousand people each year. (According to some studies, more than half of longtime smokers will die from smoking-related complications.) It’s incredibly hard to stop smoking; people spend lifetimes trying. Around seventy per cent of American smokers say that they want to quit, and for many of them e-cigarettes have been a godsend. But, according to a 2017 study by the C.D.C., about fifty per cent more high schoolers and middle schoolers vape than smoke. Young people have taken a technology that was supposed to help grownups stop smoking and invented a new kind of bad habit, one that they have molded in their own image. The potential public-health benefit of the e-cigarette is being eclipsed by the unsettling prospect of a generation of children who may really love to vape.
These devices are permitted on planes, but the FAA recently notified airlines that the lithium batteries used in these devices are fire hazards and should not be packed in checked baggage. This page may contain information that is outdated and may not reflect current policy or programs. But, CDC stats on teen smoking show that while use of e-cigs went up to 24% in 2015, cigarette smoking dropped to an historic low -- to just under 11%.
Results of toxicological analyses suggest that e-cigarettes can be safer than conventional cigarettes, although harmful effects from short-term e-cigarette use have been described. Worryingly, the potential long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption have been scarcely investigated. In this review, we take stock of the main findings in this field and their consequences for human health including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Heart failure is a condition affecting more than 6 million U.S. adults in which the heart becomes too stiff or too weak to pump blood as effectively as it should.
Don't hesitate to call if you have any concerns after using nicotine, OR if you have questions BEFORE using nicotine products. Electronic Cigarette tax is collected in addition to the Sales tax on retail transactions of consumable material and vapor products. The campaign has been developed by the NSW Cancer Institute in consultation with young people and medical experts, and includes testimonial videos of young people who have experienced the health harms of vaping. People are more likely to quit successfully if they have help from a health professional. Once you have been vaping for a while and feel sure you will not go back to smoking, you should aim to quit vaping too. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, including "vapes," "e-cigs," "puff bars," and "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)." E-cigarettes are devices which produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine—the addictive drug in regular cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products—flavorings, and other chemicals that help to make the aerosol. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air. The nicotine in e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes is highly addictive. While these devices may help some people quit smoking, there is growing evidence that e-cigarettes can pose serious health risks, especially to people who do not smoke traditional cigarettes.
The vapor produced by e-cigarettes usually contains nicotine, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), and in some cases, flavoring linked to serious lung disease. These and other harmful substances present in e-cigarette vapor can negatively affect the respiratory health of users. The monitoring of other tobacco product sales in conjunction with the monitoring of e-cigarette sales is necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of the overall U.S. tobacco product market. These cigarette data briefs provide estimates of cigarette sales in the U.S. market overall and select U.S. states. In January 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the removal of flavored cartridge-based e-cigarettes from the market. This rule does not prohibit the sale of tobacco and menthol flavored cartridge-based e-cigarettes, flavored disposable e-cigarettes, or refillable flavored e-cigarette products.
This mixture is typically made up of propylene glycol and/or glycerol (vegetable glycerin) and other chemicals. Flavouring ingredients include chemicals and blends of chemicals used to make different flavours. Disposable e-cigarettes are not covered by the flavor restrictions imposed by the Food and Drug Administration.
E-cigarettes have been allowed to stay on the market for years without undergoing a full review of their public health impact, sparking a sustained and ongoing crisis of youth use. As of November 2023, the FDA has not completed reviewing all applications from e-cigarette makers to market their products, leaving many e-cigarettes on the market while waiting for a decision. To date, the FDA has denied permission to market flavored and menthol e-cigarette products such as Vuse Solo, Vuse Vibe, Vuse Ciro, and Vuse Alto. The FDA has denied permission to market many non-tobacco and non-menthol flavored e-cigarette products, however, many of those denials are currently under judicial or supervisory review. In recent years, the FDA has increased enforcement efforts around e-cigarette manufacturers and retailers for continuing to sell youth-appealing e-cigarettes. These actions include issuing warning letters, fines, injunctions, and joint operations with other federal officials to seize imports of unauthorized e-cigarette products.
However, the long-term effects of all flavour chemicals used by this industry (which are more than 15,000) remain unknown and they are not usually included in the product label [78]. Furthermore, there is no safety guarantee since they may harbour potential toxic or irritating properties [5]. In addition to its toxicological effects on foetus development, nicotine can disrupt brain development in adolescents and young adults [44,45,46]. Several studies have also suggested that nicotine is potentially carcinogenic (reviewed in [41]), but more work is needed to prove its carcinogenicity independently of the combustion products of tobacco [47].
The flavored vape juice inside contains only vegetable glycerine and organic fruit extracts. That means it's free from all the harmful chemicals we mentioned above. It's a stripped-down, vegan-friendly, nicotine-free vaping experience. When I smoked cigarettes, I dealt with inconveniences due to my addiction. I would be forced to leave the company of my friends and family to go stand outdoors, like an outcast or lesser human, so that I could prevent myself from having a withdrawal meltdown.
Among girls, only a higher proportion of never-users in the school remained protective for S-SM and S-EC. Among boys, the same was observed for S-EC, whereas a higher proportion of students with positive attitudes towards snus use in one’s age group increased S-SN. Interestingly, a higher proportion of students planning for general upper secondary education had lowered S-EC and S-SN in the univariate analyses but increased S-SM and S-SN in the multivariate models. This may reflect, for instance, more complex interactions between individual- and school-level factors influencing susceptibility among boys. In general, students with positive attitude towards product use in one’s age group and current use of some other tobacco or nicotine product had consistently higher susceptibility regardless of product type.
However, when they looked at other scenarios, such as bar settings where many people were vaping, the researchers found that the concentration of toxins in the air was generally much higher than in residential settings. The more people were vaping and the higher voltages were used, the worse the air quality. In some scenarios, levels of both formaldehyde and acrolein were above OEHHA safety standards for bar employees. This article explains the toxins found in vaping aerosol, the factors affecting secondhand vaping, and potential health effects. MARIE — The Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan has partnered with Truth Initiative to offer a first-of-its-kind free and anonymous text message quit vaping program through the This is Quitting for teens and young adults.

The 2021 report also provides details on some characteristics of e-cigarette products, including flavors and nicotine concentration, as well as the bundling of the components in cartridge systems.
Use of microporous ceramic as a wicking material improves heating efficiency, but how it affects the chemical emissions of these devices is unclear. We assessed the emissions of a pod e-cigarette with innovative ceramic wick-based technology and two flavoured e-liquids containing nicotine lactate and nicotine benzoate (57 and 18 mg mL−1 nicotine, respectively). Among the studied harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) listed by the US FDA and/or WHO TobReg, only 5 (acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, naphthalene and nornicotine) were quantified at levels of 0.14 to 100 ng puff−1. In the combustible cigarette (Kentucky reference 1R6F), levels were from 0.131 to 168 µg puff−1.

Using e-cigarettes, or "vaping," are terms used synonymously to refer to the use of a wide variety of electronic, battery-operated devices that aerosolize, but do not burn, liquids to release nicotine and other substances. Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are regulated as "tobacco products" by the FDA because the nicotine is derived from the tobacco plant. E-cigarettes pose a threat to the health of users and the harms are becoming increasingly apparent. In the past few years, the use of these products has increased at an alarming rate among young people in significant part because the newest, re-engineered generation of e-cigarettes more effectively delivers large amounts of nicotine to the brain.
As a result, vaping THC may produce a faster, stronger high, but it may also mean that people experience more adverse effects. Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required. The mislabelling of nicotine content in e-liquids has been previously addressed [8, 34]. Of note, several studies have detected nicotine in those e-liquids labelled as nicotine-free [5, 35, 36]. Among the 17 samples tested in this latter study 14 were identified to be counterfeit or suspected counterfeit. A third study detected nicotine in 7 of 10 nicotine-free refills, although the concentrations were lower than those identified in the previous analyses (0.1–15 µg/mL) [5].
E-cigarettes are available in flavors like cherry, bubble gum, and cotton candy, and are allowed to be advertised on TV, which may increase their appeal for children and teens. Many are already working on efforts to combat this crisis, and we now ask for redoubled efforts and increased coordination. Below are recommended actions that different groups can take to address this issue. Cross-tabulations and Pearson χ2-tests were conducted with IBM SPSS 27.0, and multilevel logistic regression analyses with MlwiN 3.05. The associations between the student- and school-level independent variables and S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN were tested with two-level logistic regression models, with students on level one and schools on level two. The estimation procedure in the random intercept models was second-order predictive quasi-likelihood (PQL2). Analyses were stratified by gender due to significant interactions between gender and educational aspirations for all three outcomes in the unadjusted analyses.
