While vaping might help you quit smoking, it probably won’t help you quit nicotine altogether. The CDC has identified vitamin E acetate as a chemical of concern among people with EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a thickening agent often used in THC vaping products, and it was found in all lung fluid samples of EVALI patients examined by the CDC. Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes are generally battery-operated and use a heating element to heat e-liquid from a cartridge (usually refillable), releasing a chemical-filled aerosol. Below are answers to common questions about e-cigarettes, including health consequences, risks of secondhand emissions, kids and e-cigarettes and FDA oversight. This is Quitting is tailored based on age (13-24 years old) and product usage to give teens and young adults appropriate recommendations about quitting.
To vape is to inhale vapor created from a liquid heated up inside a device. The devices have many names—vape pens, pod mods, tanks, electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS), e-hookahs and e-cigarettes. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine and their repeated use can lead to nicotine addiction or increase the user's risk of addiction. Some e-cigarette brands contain nicotine salts to mask the harshness of nicotine and make it more palatable. As of 2018, all tobacco products must bear the required nicotine addictiveness warning statement on product packages and advertisements in order to warn consumers about the presence of and addictive nature of nicotine.
Fortunately, there has been a substantial drop in cases since they peaked in August and September of 2020. What’s more, researchers have also identified vitamin E acetate, a chemical added to some THC-containing vaping products, as the main—but possibly not the only—cause of the illness. The outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth.
High level of parental education was operationalized as at least one parent having tertiary education, and parental smoking as at least one parent smoking currently. ’ and dichotomized from responses Very much/quite a lot (vs. fairly little/not at all). Delaware Kick Butts Generation A youth-led program in schools and communities to counter tobacco marketing. E-cigarette flavorings damage human blood vessel cells grown in the lab even in the absence of nicotine, Stanford researchers and their colleagues found. Children are much more prone to nicotine overdose because of their smaller body size. Nicotine poisoning in children comes mostly from eating cigarettes and consuming liquid nicotine — either from absorbing spilled nicotine through their skin or through the mucous membrane in their mouth or from swallowing liquid nicotine.
Many are already working on efforts to combat this crisis, and we now ask for redoubled efforts and increased coordination. Below are recommended actions that different groups can take to address this issue. Cross-tabulations and Pearson χ2-tests were conducted with IBM SPSS 27.0, and multilevel logistic regression analyses with MlwiN 3.05. The associations between the student- and school-level independent variables and S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN were tested with two-level logistic regression models, with students on level one and schools on level two. The estimation procedure in the random intercept models was second-order predictive quasi-likelihood (PQL2). Analyses were stratified by gender due to significant interactions between gender and educational aspirations for all three outcomes in the unadjusted analyses.
These assessments were designed solely to maximize retention; they were not analyzed as outcomes. The ACS encourages adolescent users who find it difficult to quit to ask for help from health care professionals. Parents should learn all they can about e-cigarette use and be prepared to help their children get the assistance they need. In 2019, more than one in six (15.2%) New York City high school students reported using e-cigarettes.
For information about ENDS products that are authorized for marketing in the U.S., view FDA’s "Searchable Tobacco Products Database." These problems can seriously hurt the person using the ENDS product and others around them. There may be added dangers, for example if a vape battery catches fire near an oxygen tank, a propane tank (such as used in backyard grills), or a gas pump, or if a person has a vape-related seizure while driving. Experimenting with different ways of using vaping materials may be additionally risky. In addition, nicotine use can affect areas of a young person’s brain that are responsible for attention and learning. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax, or collapsed lung, occurs when there’s a hole in the lung through which oxygen escapes.
This means that e-cigarettes cannot be used in areas where smoking is banned. Patients affected by the disease have symptoms ranging from cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath to fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and fever. Since the initial outbreak, federal and state officials have reported thousands of cases and dozens of deaths related to EVALI. Ventilation, filtration and air cleaning techniques may reduce harmful substances released from e-cigarette use indoors but are not likely to eliminate them. Learn more about e-cigarette aerosol from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The FDA faced a self-imposed court deadline at the end of this month to wrap up its yearslong review of major vaping brands, including Juul and Vuse.
Experts have long suspected it, but a new study confirms that folks who vape and smoke tobacco face higher risks for lung cancer than if they'd done either alone. Propylene glycol, for example, is usually eaten (in cupcakes, soft drinks and salad dressings) or slathered onto the body (in soaps, shampoos and antiperspirants)—not breathed into the lungs. Many things that can be safely eaten—such as flour—can damage the lungs when inhaled. "We have little information about what happens to propylene glycol in the air," the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says on its Web site.
Upon the selection of the educational track, students may already have normative perceptions of smoking in vocational schools, such as understanding of smoking as an integral and expected practice in these schools and professions [8]. These perceptions may increase S-SM and other nicotine product use, also among students with better academic performance. Student network characteristics and their associations with smoking vary between schools [28].
With millions of teens and young adults using e-cigarettes, a new generation could become addicted to nicotine and face other health risks. For some adult smokers, e-cigarettes may offer a less harmful substitute for traditional cigarettes. However, long-term effects on users, second-hand exposure, and environmental effects are not yet fully known. The e-liquid typically contains humectants and flavourings, with or without nicotine; once vapourised by the atomiser, the aerosol (vapour) provides a sensation similar to tobacco smoking, but purportedly without harmful effects [3].
Guidance exists on best practices on this concept of accountability — known as end-producer responsibility — but isn’t enforced across the industry by any governing body. Substances from inhaled aerosol particles reaching the e-cigarette user’s lungs, blood, and brain. Minnesota’s middle school and high school students who have asthma who vaped or smoked in the past 30 days reported experiencing more frequent symptoms of asthma than students who did not have asthma who had not vaped or smoked.
Results of toxicological analyses suggest that e-cigarettes can be safer than conventional cigarettes, although harmful effects from short-term e-cigarette use have been described. Worryingly, the potential long-term effects of e-cigarette consumption have been scarcely investigated. In this review, we take stock of the main findings in this field and their consequences for human health including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Heart failure is a condition affecting more than 6 million U.S. adults in which the heart becomes too stiff or too weak to pump blood as effectively as it should.
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, also highlighted that vaping "could be a major form of harm reduction for adults," although "not zero risk," but expressed strong concern over youth vaping. With the increasing use of e‑cigarettes, there has been greater support for policies aimed at controlling the prevalence of e‑cigarettes. You may also want to make an appointment with a doctor if you think vaping is behind any new symptoms, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, or increased heart rate.
While there appears to be some consensus that vaping may be less harmful to health than tobacco cigarette smoking, the dangers of e-cigarettes remain unclear. The range of e-liquid flavours available to consumers is extensive and is used to attract both current smokers and new e-cigarette users, which is a growing public health concern [6]. In fact, over 5 million middle- and high-school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2019 [75], and appealing flavours have been identified as the primary reason for e-cigarette consumption in 81% of young users [76]. Since 2016, the FDA regulates the flavours used in the e-cigarette market and has recently published an enforcement policy on unauthorised flavours, including fruit and mint flavours, which are more appealing to young users [77].
FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS, including components and parts of ENDS but excluding accessories. An outbreak of EVALI in late 2019 and early 2020 put thousands of people in the hospital. Since then, EVALI cases have been declining, but people who vape can still get EVALI. Research from the CDC shows that vaping among youth has declined somewhat since 2020.
"This is Our Watch" is a voluntary education program with resources to help tobacco retailers better understand and comply with FDA tobacco regulations. Tobacco retailers play a direct role in protecting kids from nicotine addiction and the deadly effects of tobacco use. Learn what tobacco retailers need to do to comply with the rules designed to prevent our nation's youth from becoming the next generation of Americans to die prematurely from tobacco-related disease.
In the United States, the mortality rate for smokers is three times that of people who never smoked. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that smoking is the most common preventable cause of death in the United States. Due to its recent dynamic economic development and continued population growth, Africa presents the greatest risk in terms of future growth in tobacco use. In the United States, the age to buy tobacco products is 21 in all states as of 2020. The seven most important carcinogens in tobacco smoke are shown in the table, along with DNA alterations they cause. The United States has implemented textual but not graphical warnings. Each e-cigarette was inserted into a sealed chamber attached to a lab-built device that drew air through the e-cigarette for eight seconds at a time with a resting period of 15 or 30 second between each draw. Established in 2015, VAPORESSO’s goal has been to establish a smoke-free world while raising the quality of life for our users through innovation and experience.
A lack of data has led to classification of methylgloxal as a Group 3 carcinogen (carcinogenicity to humans not classifiable) by IARC. Both compounds have been previously detected in e-cigarette emissions at concentrations of 0.07–0.94 and 0.09–33 µg puff–1, respectively86,88. In our study, glyoxal was present at lower levels (BB57 and BB18, 0.02 and 0.05 µg puff–1, respectively), while methylglyoxal was at concentrations of 0.13 and 0.19 µg puff–1 in BB57 and BB18, respectively (Table 3). Glyoxal was detected in the method air blank and therefore the actual levels in the e-cigarette emissions are potentially lower than reported in Table 3.
Vape flavors like mint and mango appeal to young people and mask the harshness of nicotine. The small, discreet size of vapes and e-cigarettes make them easy to conceal at school and home. The bottom line is e-cigarettes and vapes are unsafe for kids, teens and young adults. Nicotine is harmful to the developing brain and the use of e-cigarettes as a teen increases the likelihood of smoking cigarettes as an adult. The chemical additives and flavoring can also cause unwanted health effects.
Replacing your cigarette with a cigar, pipe, e-cigarette, or hookah won’t help you avoid the health risks. The U.S. government has taken steps to restrict most flavored vaping products, effective in 2020. While this should reduce the number of flavored cartridges available in the United States, the guidelines are limited to products submitted for market authorization and don’t include those made at home or purchased online from other countries. Other studies suggest that while using e-cigarettes sends pollutants into the air, the concentration of these toxins drops quickly after someone stops vaping (much faster than cigarette smoke), but that doesn’t mean that the risk has gone away. Some, for example, will settle on surfaces, such as carpets or furniture, where small children might touch them or inadvertently ingest them when placing contaminated objects in their mouths.
In the case of the enzymatic reaction, the two substrates (reactants) are again acetic ester and H2O, the two products of the reaction are alcohol and acetate. Once the acetate group is removed from the cellulose chain, the polymer can be readily degraded by cellulase, which is another enzyme found in fungi, bacteria, and protozoans. Cellulases break down the cellulose molecule into monosaccharides ("simple sugars") such as beta-glucose, or shorter polysaccharides and oligosaccharides. Discarded cigarette filters usually end up in the water system through drainage ditches and are transported by rivers and other waterways to the ocean.
Most modern cigarettes are filtered, although this does not make the smoke inhaled from them contain fewer carcinogens and harmful chemicals. Nicotine, the psychoactive drug in tobacco, makes cigarettes highly addictive. About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related disease and lose on average 14 years of life.
Without immediate measures to stop epidemic use of these products, the long-term adverse health effects will increase. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults.
Electronic cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. Richmond-based Altria previously took a $13 billion stake in Juul in 2018, when the brand controlled most of the U.S. vaping market. But Juul’s value plummeted after it was hit with lawsuits and investigations over its role in sparking a national spike in underage vaping.
If a child ingests or touches fluids with an allergen in it, they could have a reaction. This, however, is only a theoretical risk for now, as little research has been done on the topic. One study, for example, found that under most conditions, someone vaping at home all day didn’t change the air quality a terrible amount unless they vaped intensely at a high voltage.
E-cigarettes consist of a mouthpiece, an e-liquid chamber, an atomiser and a battery. The atomiser has a wicking material that draws the e-liquid onto a battery-powered heating coil. Optimal vapour production depends on an efficient supply of e-liquid to the heating coil, which is limited by the wicking and rate of e-liquid evaporation10,11,12. Power levels that produce aerosol beyond the ability of the wick to resupply the liquid to the coil may result in overheating of the atomizer coil and consequently overheating of the e-liquid10,11. Different types of wicking material, varying in size and shape, have been used in e-cigarettes3,13.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a combination of counseling and medications as the best strategy for quitting smoking. Vaping companies have long claimed their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. The FDA has not authorized any flavored e-cigarette products and reports that it has denied marketing applications for millions of flavored products. E-cigarette companies have filed over 60 lawsuits challenging the FDA’s marketing denial orders. In addition, while the FDA denied marketing applications for all Juul products in June 2022, it subsequently put that decision on hold in the face of a lawsuit by Juul. When e-cigarette products first became popular, we didn’t have much information about health risks.

By contrast, in most developed countries, female smoking rates are typically only a few percentage points below those of males.
Death from nicotine poisoning is not common in adults because of their larger body size. However, using more than one type of nicotine-containing product at the same time can increase your risk. As the name suggests, cigalike kits are designed to look and feel like tobacco cigarettes. Cigarette-style vape kits are easy to use and, rather than being refillable, take prefilled flavour cartridges known as cartomizers or refills.
There have also been cases of e-cigarettes exploding or catching fire. Some chronic users have developed obstructions in their lung pathways that cause them to suffer 'asthma-like' symptoms. Similar to Wyoming, the state's vast rural areas might contribute to difficulty enforcing regulations surrounding youth vaping. West Virginia came in second place, with 28 percent of teens vaping last year. The large rural area may make it more difficult to enforce the state's vaping laws. Rural areas also tend to have less access to clinics and resources about the health harms surrounding vaping.
E-cigarettes are popular among teens and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2019, nearly 28 percent of high-school students and 11 percent of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. About 8 percent of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes in 2018. In 2019, nearly 28% of high-school students and 11% of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. A Foundation-led study presented at the 2024 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco annual meeting found that monthly e-cigarette sales in California declined by 41% after statewide restrictions on the sale of flavored tobacco products took effect. However, the report also noted that the tobacco industry continues to market products to offset these declines, including non-menthol cigarettes that contain other cooling chemicals. Continuing to monitor flavored tobacco product sales is key to assessing policies like these and informing further policy development and implementation. Toxicity is not the only factor in considering risk to an individual or a population from exposure to ENDS emissions.
Still, many people, including teens and young adults drawn to vaping, may not realize that, Bittoni said. Other popular brands, like Puff Bar, have received warnings from regulators about the sale of flavored devices as well. Following the Golden State, Washington had the second-lowest amount of youth vapers, at eight percent. In the Evergreen state, the legal age to purchase vapes is 21, and there is a ban on all flavored varieties. Last year, Alaska Senate President Gary Stevens, a Republican, introduced Senate Bill 89, aimed at imposing the state's first-ever tax on e-cigarette products. Wyoming had the highest rate of youth vapers, with 30 percent of kids under 18 reporting they had used e-cigarettes in 2023.
E-cigarettes and vape products are not FDA-approved cessation devices. For more information and support to help you quit contact the Georgia Tobacco Quit Line. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) liquid known as e-juice (vape juice) containing highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
Similar results emerged when they excluded individual states with statewide policies from the analysis, showing that no one state was driving this effect. Bans on all vapes, including both flavored and unflavored, also resulted in more cigarette sales. The authors used rigorous statistical tools to estimate long-term effects of e-cigarette flavor restrictions on electronic and conventional cigarette sales in jurisdictions across 16 states. They also examined how these effects varied between brands disproportionately used by underage youth versus adults. "From a public health perspective, we have always been concerned about dual-use of both traditional and e-cig products," said study lead author Marisa Bittoni, an oncology researcher at Ohio State University in Columbus. A second brand of e-cigarettes — marketed as Nixotine, Nixodine, Nixamide and Nic-Safe – contained a nicotine analog called nicotinamide, also at levels lower than the labels indicated, and combined with undisclosed amounts of 6-methyl nicotine. He emphasised that e-cigarettes are not an effective tobacco cessation tool, as they are not approved by food regulatory bodies. Additionally, they often lead to dual usage with people continuing to use traditional cigarettes along e-cigarettes.
You may have heard the benefits of vaping are that it’s safe or that it helps you quit smoking. Some people vape because they think it’ll help them quit smoking if they’ve already tried other methods and haven’t been able to quit. Unfortunately, you may end up addicted to vaping instead, so the benefits of vaping for smoking cessation may not be as good as they seem.
Research from The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 reveals thousands of chemical ingredients in vape products, most of which are not yet identified. Among those the team could identify were several potentially harmful substances, including caffeine, three chemicals never previously found in e-cigarettes, a pesticide and two flavorings linked with possible toxic effects and respiratory irritation. "These cases appear to predominantly affect people who modify their vaping devices or use black market modified e-liquids. This is especially true for vaping products containing THC," explains Blaha. The American Lung Association will continue to urge FDA and Congress to remove all flavored tobacco products from the marketplace.
Vapes are often viewed and marketed as a safe alternative to smoking. Secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer in people who don’t smoke. They compared this information against vape and cigarette sales data over four-week intervals from January 2018 through March 2023, a period during which flavor restrictions went from affecting 1.3% of the U.S. population to affecting 38%.
We want to make a difference in the lives of our users, and create products that can fit all levels and styles of vapers, to help as many as possible. According to the 2017 Behavior Risk Factor Survey (BRFS) conducted by DHSS, 4.8 percent of Delaware adults currently use e-cigarettes, roughly the same percentage reported in the 2016 survey.
One study detected vitamin E acetate in the lung fluid of 48 out of 51 EVALI patients sampled across 16 states. By contrast, lung fluid samples taken from healthy people did not contain the vitamin. EVALI is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. The smoke-free and tobacco-free policies at schools, businesses, healthcare institutions, and other organizations should also cover e-cigarettes. This will help non-users avoid being exposed to potentially harmful e-cigarette aerosol.
"It’s young people doing something terrible for them that’s supposed to be healthy," he said. There’s a whole genre of throwing-away-my-Juul videos on social media, with people tossing their vape into a river or a snowbank as dramatic music plays. New research led by Roswell Park experts in health behavior and published today in the journal JAMA Network Open suggests that daily e-cigarette use may help some people to quit using combustible cigarettes.
Vaping can cause breathing problems, organ damage, addiction and other conditions. Lots of people want to know about the health effects of e-cigarettes. They’re still a relatively new product, so it’s too soon to know for sure. This is because e-cigarettes don’t contain cancer-causing tobacco, and most of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes are not in e-cigarettes. High rates of vaping are "especially concerning given the rate of youth and young adults using these products," she said in a university news release.
New York State law restricts the sale of flavored vapor products intended or reasonably expected to be used with or for the consumption of nicotine, regardless of whether the nicotine is derived from tobacco or synthetic. However, it has been reported that the heating process can lead to the generation of new decomposition compounds that may be hazardous [4, 5]. The levels of nicotine, which is the key addictive component of tobacco, can also vary between the commercially available e-liquids, and even nicotine-free options are available. For this particular reason, e-cigarettes are often viewed as a smoking cessation tool, given that those with nicotine can prevent smoking craving, yet this idea has not been fully demonstrated [2, 6, 7].
Many people diagnosed with EVALI need to be treated in a hospital where medications can be closely monitored, and respiratory support is readily available. "I screen all of my patients, any child over age 12, since [vaping] can exacerbate underlying conditions like asthma," says Yale Medicine pediatric pulmonologist Pnina Weiss, MD. Siegel is concerned that the use of nicotine salts could make the Juul more addictive. "With Juul, the pattern of use isn’t kids having a cherry vape every now and then," he said. "It’s kids sneaking off to the bathroom, kids vaping consistently throughout the day." Siegel said that he was keeping an eye on this behavior.

There is no single test for EVALI; it’s what is known as a "diagnosis of exclusion," which means that a doctor will conduct tests to rule out other potential diseases and conditions. The primary risk factor for EVALI is current or previous use of a vaping device. They can look like cigarettes, cigars, pipes, pens, USB flash drives, or may be in other forms. We fund research that explores how risk factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and lack of physical activity can affect the development of cancer. For instance, 68 people died in an outbreak of vaping-related illness (EVALI) in 2019 and 2020. Links to E-Cigarette Resources Links other websites, reports educational materials, toolkits and more information on e-cigarettes.
Despite this trend all current evidence finds that e-cigarettes carry a fraction of the risk of smoking. The 966 respondents who had never vaped more often believed that e-cigarette waste was dangerous to throw in trash compared to the 1,083 respondents who had vaped at least once (81.4% vs. 71%). Fewer of those who had vaped at least once (79.3%) believed that e-cigarettes contained toxic substances compared to those who had never vaped (89.6%). Young respondents clearly recognized the dangers of e-cigarette waste to humans and the environment and want an appropriate method to recycle.
Many grants on this topic are funded through the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program, an NIH partnership with FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products to fund research to inform FDA’s tobacco regulatory activities. Interestingly, most of these reports linking COVID-19 harmful effects with smoking or vaping, are based on their capability of increasing the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the lung.
