The term "vaping" comes from the act of inhaling and exhaling e-cigarette vapor (which is actually an aerosol). E-cigarettes heat up liquid from replaceable cartridges, producing the vapor. Just like a smoker does, an e-cigarette user inhales the vapor through the device, then exhales. People who switch from traditional cigarettes to e-products may put off getting medical help or trying proven tools that can help with quitting. In absence of federal law, states are acting to remove flavored nicotine products from the shelves. All the e-cigarettes previously authorized by the FDA have been tobacco, which isn’t widely used by young people who vape.
In this article, we discuss the risks of vaping versus smoking and consider the long-term effects and risks of both. In light of these results, policymakers might want to consider other approaches to protect public health where tobacco is concerned, the authors wrote in the study. Of the increase in cigarette sales, 71% were of non-menthol cigarettes, suggesting that restrictions on menthol cigarettes would not counteract this effect. The primary outcome of interest was volume sales of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes per capita, during each four-week period, both overall and by type of flavor. Parents and anti-tobacco groups immediately criticized the decision, which follows years of advocacy efforts to keep menthol and other flavors that can appeal to teens off the market. The FDA said it authorized four menthol e-cigarettes from Njoy, the vaping brand recently acquired by tobacco giant Altria, which also sells Marlboro cigarettes. This is in contrast to passive smoking (secondhand smoke), which is known to be very harmful to health.
Moreover, we just don’t know the long-term effects of vaping," said Dr. Bhavna Barmi, a senior clinical psychologist. Vaping, still at epidemic levels among youth with about one in five high school students using e-cigarettes in 2020, generates a significant amount of toxic and plastic waste. Many popular e-cigarettes, like JUUL, are pod-based with single-use plastic cartridges containing nicotine. Generating even more waste are disposable e-cigarettes like Puff Bar, which are designed entirely for one-time use and have skyrocketed in popularity with a 1,000% increase in use among high school students between 2019 and 2020. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can affect learning, memory, and attention. It can also increase risk for future addiction to nicotine and other drugs.

Although e-cigarettes do not give off smoke like tobacco cigarettes, they do expose people to secondhand aerosol or "vapor" that may contain harmful substances. Scientists are still learning about the health effects of being exposed to secondhand e-cigarette aerosol. The FDA monitors the national usage rates for all tobacco products, including an annual youth survey, and has seen a drastic increase in youth use of e-cigarette products in recent years.
This data brief demonstrates that teens whose environments put them at risk for use of e-cigarettes are more likely to try them. The study, published on May 23, 2022, in Tobacco Control, is the first to look at the health care costs of e-cigarette use among adults 18 and older. The second most supported measure, strengthening restrictions on the advertising and promotion of e‑cigarettes, was supported by 82% of people. In 2019, only 67% of people in Australia supported strengthening these restrictions. The proportion of people neither smoking regular cigarettes nor using e‑cigarettes has remained stable (Figure 3).

Although there’s no definitive answer at this point, experts do have a theory about how vaping harms lungs. Young people who vape may be more likely to become addicted than adults. Nicotine exposure during this vital time can affect brain development in subtle and important ways. Research published in 2017 found that the high temperatures needed to form the mist for vaping can create dozens of toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which is thought to cause cancer.
Strong decisive action is needed to prevent the uptake of e-cigarettes based on the growing body of evidence of its use by children and adolescents and health harms. Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes reviews and critically assesses the state of the emerging evidence about e-cigarettes and health. That legal decision allowed sales of e-cigarettes to proceed but left many questions about their safety unaddressed. To lower the potential risks posed by secondhand aerosol exposure from vaping, some U.S. states, territories, and cities have started restricting where people can vape. There are currently more than 7,000 varieties of flavored e-cigarettes and e-juice (liquid containing nicotine that is used in refillable devices) on the market. Although the popularity and use of e-cigarettes continues to increase, there is a lack of data on their potential health effects. Federal, state, and/or local governments need to set clear standards on environmentally responsible e-cigarette waste disposal and hold the industry accountable for adhering to them. E-cigarette manufacturers introduced a new tobacco product that soared in popularity with little thought on how to responsibly dispose of the resulting tons of e-cigarette waste. The group then performed a statistical analysis to determine group differences in vascular function before and after vaping.
While e-cigarette use prevalence has declined significantly since the heyday of JUUL — 10% of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023 — e-cigarette use among young people remains a concern. Thousands of flavored, high-nicotine, and relatively cheap e-cigarette products remain on the market — many of them illegally — driving youth use and nicotine addiction. Equally concerning, nearly half of young people who have ever tried e-cigarettes continue to use them, and many do so daily. As encouraging as the data was a few years ago, it’s starting to look like that’s not the case. The FDA is yet to approve them as a smoking cessation aid and a recent CDC study found that most adult e-cigarette users — 58.8 percent of them — don't stop smoking cigarettes and instead wind up using both products. The few scientists actively trying to fill the gap in the research literature are running into obstacles.
It's a faster-acting alternative to gummies and other edible supplements. Unfortunately, there have been some cases of negative health effects from unhealthy additives in CBD pens. That's why you're better off with these disposable vapes from Tribe Tokes, which are routinely tested by third-party labs to ensure their purity. Most disposable e-cigarettes heat nicotine to around 390 degrees, and the Elf Bar is no exception. Since it's so much hotter than the vapes listed above, it may put more stress on your lungs. Though we're always cautious about recommending nicotine products, it's hard to deny that they're less dangerous than cigarette smoking.
That said, there are some concerns about how repeatedly inhaling e-cigarette aerosol over an extended period of time could affect bystanders’ long-term lung function and risk of allergic reactions. "I applaud Governor Cuomo for taking action to prevent exposure to secondhand e-cigarette emissions in public places for all New Yorkers." ALBANY, NY (November 22, 2017) - The New York State Department of Health is reminding all New Yorkers that beginning today the use of electronic cigarettes is banned indoors everywhere that smoking tobacco products are prohibited in New York. Despite these uncertainties, the use of e-cigarettes has skyrocketed since their introduction about a decade ago, particularly among young people. The Food and Drug Administration estimates that more than 3.5 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in 2018, though sales to minors are prohibited. In 2018, the FDA restricted the sale of flavored e-cigarettes to adult-only venues, with the exception of tobacco, menthol and mint flavors, which can be sold wherever traditional cigarettes are sold.

The replaceable liquid cartridge contains nicotine mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), along with flavorings and chemicals. The tip often contains LED lights that simulate the glow of a burning cigarette. Nicotine poisoning can occur when someone ingests, inhales, or absorbs nicotine through the skin or eyes. First introduced in the United States about 15 years ago, e-cigarettes have evolved from disposable, single-use products to more sophisticated devices that can be refilled and customized (fig. 1). PHILADELPHIA – Smoking e-cigarettes, also called vaping, has been marketed as a safe alternative to tobacco cigarettes and is rising in popularity among non-smoking adolescents.
Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).
Last year, 9.4% of individuals ages 12 years and above reported vaping nicotine within the previous month, up from 8.3% in 2022. "This research has provided greater understanding in the court systems nationwide as to the nature of drug usage, abuse, and overdose cases in which electronic cigarettes were used to deliver an illicit drug," the researchers concluded. THC, synthetic cannabinoids, and dextromethorphan, a drug found in some cough medicines, "were identified in e-liquids purportedly containing only CBD to be consumed for ‘health benefits,’" the researchers said. Results from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey do not provide evidence for or against the use of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool, or as a gateway to tobacco smoking. The age groups most likely to smoke tobacco in 2019 and 2022–2023 were the least likely to use e-cigarettes, and the age groups most likely to use e-cigarettes had low tobacco smoking rates in 2019 and 2022–2023. In 2022–2023, 1 in 5 (19.8%) people aged 14 and over in Australia reported having used e‑cigarettes at least once in their lifetime, with 7% currently using e‑cigarettes at least daily, weekly, monthly, or less often than monthly.
A 2016 study found that people who use or have used e-cigarettes are less likely to stop smoking altogether. Flavors vary widely, from "traditional" and menthol to watermelon and "lava flow." Some e-cigarettes taste like traditional cigarettes and even mimic the tastes of specific brands. When the user sucks on the mouthpiece, the heating element vaporizes the solution, which the person then "vapes," or inhales. The nicotine content of the liquid can range from "very high" to zero. Refills come in flavors such as cool cucumber, mango, and mint, which may seem natural and harmless, but a single JUUL refill contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 cigarettes. To inform this work and evaluate the effectiveness of policy, the CDC Foundation is collecting and analyzing information about e-cigarette sales, teen e-cigarette use, and teens’ attitudes about the epidemic.
Instead of bathing lung tissue with a therapeutic mist, just as a nebulizer does, vaping coats lungs with potentially harmful chemicals. E-liquid concoctions usually include some mix of flavorings, aromatic additives and nicotine or THC (the chemical in marijuana that causes psychological effects), dissolved in an oily liquid base. "We think that some of the vaporized elements of the oil are getting deep down into the lungs and causing an inflammatory response," explains Broderick.
The e-liquid is quickly heated and converted to an aerosol that can be inhaled into the lungs. As smoking has declined dramatically in the U.S., vaping has gained tremendous popularity very quickly. A 2018 study reported 20% of high schoolers vaped at least once in the past 30 days. Since e-cigarettes often contain the same chemicals as traditional cigarettes, smoke produced by vaping may be toxic to people nearby. Manufacturers claim that e-cigarettes bypass many of the health risks of tobacco smoking, providing a healthful alternative.
Fetal exposure to e-cigarettes can adversely affect the development of the fetus in pregnant women. Exposure to emissions from e-cigarettes also poses risks to bystanders. E-cigarettes may help nonpregnant adults quit smoking cigarettes if they are used as a complete substitute for all smoked tobacco products. However, e-cigarettes are not currently approved by the FDA to help people quit smoking. If you are using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, it is important to make a plan to quit vaping.
This data highlights a small part of a larger issue, despite the ban on e-cigarettes and vapes in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes (Production, Manufacture, Import, Export, Transport, Sale, Distribution, Storage, and Advertisement) Act, 2019. The Annual Review of Physiology article summarizes what is known—and highlights where gaps in knowledge exist—about e-cigarettes and harm to the lungs. The review discusses the range of effects found in rigorous studies, including shorter-term acute effects and longer-lasting chronic impacts. As substantiated in the review, a convincing body of evidence exists that confirms e-cigarettes cause lung inflammation and injury, as well as negative health effects in multiple organs. Crotty Alexander says e-cigarettes come with far more dangers than even she expected.
In addition, the VITA only heats its vape liquid to about 240 degrees Fahrenheit. That's much lower than many other kinds of vapes, so it won't be as rough on your lungs. LUVV also says their products are tested to "safeguard against" harmful byproducts of heating metal and vape fluid. They don't provide much detail to support this claim, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Like HELO, LUVV vapes are free of diacetyl, vitamin E acetate, and nicotine.

According to the 2018 NAP report, secondhand vapor contains nicotine, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at concentrations that are above recommended levels. The 2018 NAP report found that there’s some evidence that e-cigarette exposure has adverse effects on the respiratory system. Some studies suggest that vaping may have negative effects on the lungs, but more research is needed.

The voltage ranges from 2.2 to 3.1 V and is not adjustable by the user. The device has dimensions (h × w × d) of 104.2 × 19.1 × 10.5 mm and a power output of 6.5 ± 0.5 W. The cartridges or pods consist of a plastic case holding the ceramic wick material and a flat metal heating element (NiCr, 0.8 –1.4-Ω resistance). Each pod is pre-filled with Vype e-liquid (1.9 mL) and is magnetically attached to the device.
Manufacturers claim e-cigarettes are a safe alternative to smoking regular cigarettes. Cancer is definitely a concern, given that vaping introduces a host of chemicals into the lungs. But vaping products haven’t been around long enough for us to learn whether or not they cause cancer. In 2018, 3.6 million U.S. high school and middle school students smoked an e-cigarette within 30 days of polling, making it the most common tobacco product used among this group.
As with high school students, e-cigarette use was much more common than cigarette use. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can also be called e-cigs, e-hookahs, vapes, vape pens, personal diffusers or diffuser sticks. But one vape can contain the equivalent of 50 cigarettes of nicotine in the one product. These substances can be harmful to the body, with different flavourings helping to mask these poisons when they are taken into the body. An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a battery-operated device that heats liquid nicotine, flavoring, and other additives to create an aerosol.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking. Some people believe e-cigarettes may help lower nicotine cravings in those who are trying to quit smoking. However, e-cigarettes are not an FDA-approved quit aid, and there is no conclusive scientific evidence on the effectiveness of vaping for long-term smoking cessation. It should be noted that there are seven FDA-approved quit aids that are proven safe and can be effective when used as directed.
Many grants on this topic are funded through the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program, an NIH partnership with FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products to fund research to inform FDA’s tobacco regulatory activities. Interestingly, most of these reports linking COVID-19 harmful effects with smoking or vaping, are based on their capability of increasing the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the lung. It is well known that ACE2 is the gate for SARS-CoV-2 entrance to the airways [106] and it is mainly expressed in type 2 alveolar epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages [107]. To date, most of the studies in this field indicate that current smokers have higher expression of ACE2 in the airways (reviewed by [108]) than healthy non-smokers [109, 110]. While tobacco products have been a long-standing public health issue, e-cigarette (aka e-cigs, vape pens, vapes) use has continued to gain popularity throughout the last decade. Poison centers began receiving calls about e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products in 2010, which overlaps with the initial period where these products reached the U.S. market.
Even if you’re a tobacco user, having an open, honest discussion with your teen can help. The most important thing to understand is that the liquid in e-cigarette cartridges is not regulated by the FDA. Keep reading to learn more about vaping and how it’s affecting young people.
E-cigarettes are available in flavors like cherry, bubble gum, and cotton candy, and are allowed to be advertised on TV, which may increase their appeal for children and teens. As of July 31, 2024, Poison Centers have managed 4,955 e-cigarette and liquid nicotine related exposure cases. For more information about the health effects of e-cigarettes, visit CardioSmart.org/StopSmoking. People who use e-cigarettes are significantly more likely to develop heart failure compared with those who have never used them, according to one of the largest prospective studies to date investigating possible links between vaping and heart failure. The findings are being presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session.
There’s been one case report where two brothers smoked 17 and 18 pipes of tobacco in a row and were fatally poisoned. However, the greatest risk of nicotine poisoning is in children because of their lower body weight and smaller size. The Xlim range of OXVA vape devices joined the ranks as one of our favourite product lines released in 2023. Of note, the abstinence rate found in the nicotine-replacement group was lower than what is usually expected with this therapy. Nevertheless, the incidence of throat and mouth irritation was higher in the e-cigarette group than in the nicotine-replacement group (65.3% vs. 51.2%, respectively). Also, the participant adherence to the treatment after 1-year abstinence was significantly higher in the e-cigarette group (80%) than in nicotine-replacement products group (9%) [100]. These data overall indicate that the harmful effects of nicotine should not be underestimated. Despite the established regulations, some inaccuracies in nicotine content labelling remain in different brands of e-liquids.
In 2021 "other" flavored devices made up 71 percent of all disposable devices sold or given away, with the most-popular subcategories being fruit-flavored and fruit & menthol/mint flavored products. These two subcategories alone made up more than half of all disposable e-cigarette devices sold or given away in 2021. Researchers said that the study’s prospective observational design allows them to infer, but not conclusively determine, a causal relationship between e-cigarette use and heart failure. However, with its large sample size and detailed data on substance use and health information, Bene-Alhasan said the study is one of the most comprehensive studies to assess this relationship to date. This guide is intended to provide general information about the California Electronic Cigarette Excise Tax and registration, collection, filing, and payment responsibilities of retailers of electronic cigarettes containing or sold with nicotine. When the liquid is used up or the battery dies, the user throws the device away.
E-cigarettes consist of a mouthpiece, an e-liquid chamber, an atomiser and a battery. The atomiser has a wicking material that draws the e-liquid onto a battery-powered heating coil. Optimal vapour production depends on an efficient supply of e-liquid to the heating coil, which is limited by the wicking and rate of e-liquid evaporation10,11,12. Power levels that produce aerosol beyond the ability of the wick to resupply the liquid to the coil may result in overheating of the atomizer coil and consequently overheating of the e-liquid10,11. Different types of wicking material, varying in size and shape, have been used in e-cigarettes3,13.
While vaping might help you quit smoking, it probably won’t help you quit nicotine altogether. The CDC has identified vitamin E acetate as a chemical of concern among people with EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a thickening agent often used in THC vaping products, and it was found in all lung fluid samples of EVALI patients examined by the CDC. Unlike traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes are generally battery-operated and use a heating element to heat e-liquid from a cartridge (usually refillable), releasing a chemical-filled aerosol. Below are answers to common questions about e-cigarettes, including health consequences, risks of secondhand emissions, kids and e-cigarettes and FDA oversight. This is Quitting is tailored based on age (13-24 years old) and product usage to give teens and young adults appropriate recommendations about quitting.
They observed, on average, a 34 percent reduction in the femoral artery’s dilation. These findings suggest that vaping can cause significant changes to the inner lining of blood vessels, said study lead author Alessandra Caporale, PhD, a post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory for Structural, Physiologic, and Functional Imaging at Penn. In this study, the researchers examined the impact of an e-cigarette that contained propylene glycol and glycerol with tobacco flavoring, but no nicotine, which study participants took 16, three-second puffs from. To evaluate vascular reactivity, researchers constricted the vessels of the study participants’ thigh with a cuff and then measured how quickly the blood flowed after its release. Using a multi-parametric MRI procedure, researchers scanned the femoral artery and vein in the leg before and after each vaping episode to see how vascular function changed.
Cigalike brands such as OK Vape give you a very similar experience to smoking a cigarette. Free Stop Smoking Services remain the most effective way for people to quit but we recognise the potential benefits for e-cigarettes in helping large numbers of people move away from tobacco. Much of the research to date has been on cell cultures in the laboratory and in mice. Among the important findings from the review, Christiani stress that "evidence is clear that vaping can cause inflammation of the lung cells and susceptibility to infection." Experts agree that the lungs seem to get the heaviest deposits of aerosols. There were 134 reports of e-cigarette batteries overheating, catching fire, or exploding between 2009 and January 2016, according to Michael Felberbaum, an FDA spokesperson.
We would argue that further studies with chronic administration of low doses of nicotine are required to clearly evaluate its impact on carcinogenicity. In this line, a study compared the acute impact of CS vs. e-cigarette vaping with equivalent nicotine content in healthy smokers and non-smokers. Both increased markers of oxidative stress and decreased NO bioavailability, flow-mediated dilation, and vitamin E levels showing no significant differences between tobacco and e-cigarette exposure (reviewed in [20]). Inasmuch, short-term e-cigarette use in healthy smokers resulted in marked impairment of endothelial function and an increase in arterial stiffness (reviewed in [20]). Similar effects on endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness were found in animals when they were exposed to e-cigarette vapor either for several days or chronically (reviewed in [20]).
These retail sales data briefs are intended to provide information about population trends in sales for participating retailers; they do not include online sales or vape store sales and cannot be used to make conclusions about subgroup purchasing or behaviors. These estimates are based on the information available at the time of publication and may be subject to updates as more information becomes available. The nicotine in e-liquids is readily absorbed from the lungs into the bloodstream when a person vapes an e-cigarette.
In regard to COVID-19 pandemic, the actual literature suggests that nicotine vaping may display adverse outcomes. Therefore, follow up studies are necessary to clarify the impact of e-cigarette consumption on human health in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Recently, a commonly commercialized crème brûlée-flavoured aerosol was found to contain high concentrations of benzoic acid (86.9 μg/puff), a well-established respiratory irritant [88]. When human lung epithelial cells (BEAS-2B and H292) were exposed to this aerosol for 1 h, a marked cytotoxicity was observed in BEAS-2B but not in H292 cells, 24 h later.
Where e-cigarette flavor restrictions had been in effect for at least a year, sales of cigarette brands favored by adults went up by 10%, while sales of cigarette brands that disproportionately attract underage smokers saw a 20% bump. During the study period, hundreds of localities and seven states restricted or prohibited flavored e-cigarette sales. While these policies did reduce per-capita vape sales, they also substantially boosted cigarette sales. To date, there is no state excise or special tax placed on e-cigarettes. In vaping liquids, nicotine and/or flavouring ingredients are dissolved in a liquid mixture.
This can be the result of an injury — such as a gunshot or knife wound — or when air blisters on the top of the lungs rupture and create tiny tears. Single-use, disposable e-cigarettes cost anywhere from $1 to $15 each or more. Rechargeable starter kits with multiple pods can cost anywhere from $25 to $150 or more. They may also have added flavors and contain a variety of other chemicals. 15 State of California Environmental Protection Agency Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Their tactics include slick magazine ads, sponsorship of concerts and auto races, celebrity endorsements and sweet, colorful flavors.21 In addition, e-cigarettes are often aggressively placed in convenience stores near candy. Flavors, including mint and menthol, are one of the top reasons young people use e-cigarettes. Candy and fruit-flavored e-liquids can make e-cigarettes appealing and seem harmless. As of July 2020, the sale of flavored e-cigarettes is prohibited in NYC. Further, in 2018, one in 15 (6.7%) middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarette use was higher among older students, with one in 11 (9%) seventh grade students reporting use, compared to one in 38 (2.6%) in sixth grade.
Vaping has exploded into a national crisis, and tobacco companies are electronic cigarettes allowed on american airlines helping to fuel it by targeting kids with flavors such as gummy bear and cotton candy. E-cigarette companies have promoted unsubstantiated health claims about their products as healthier than traditional cigarettes, when, in fact, e-cigarettes are uniquely dangerous for kids due to nicotine’s impact on their developing brains. Since being introduced to the U.S. market in 2007, e-cigarette use among youth has increased to epidemic levels (Surgeon General's Advisory on E-cigarette Use Among Youth, 2018). The availability of flavored e-cigarettes is one of the most commonly cited reasons for e-cigarette use among youth (Tsai et al., 2018). Given the importance of flavors contributing to use of e-cigarettes among youth, these data briefs build on this previously published article, providing an update on trends in unit sales of e-cigarettes in the U.S. by product and flavor type.
The campaign works to counteract the "cost-free" mentality held by many adolescents regarding e-cigarette use, showing them how e-cigarettes, just like cigarettes, puts them at risk for addiction and other health consequences. Besides nicotine, e-cigarette aerosol can contain harmful and cancer-causing chemicals. Defective batteries have caused fires and explosions resulting in serious injuries. Nicotine salts refer to nicotine that has been dissolved in a liquid mixture that is chemically adjusted to be weakly acidic.
To inform schools of intervention needs, the susceptibility measure could be utilized in school surveys and relevant student services as a screening tool. Simultaneously, it would support the evaluation of existing policies and programmes and monitoring of potential counter-effects. For example, an earlier study observed that school-based programmes and policies had resulted in higher susceptibility risk at some intervention schools [37]. Effective and non-counter-productive interventions are especially important for products where susceptibility is at a high level, like e-cigarettes. Interventions to reduce susceptibility therefore need to address product regulation and marketing as well as social influence, norms, and perceptions.
"If there was good evidence that people were using e-cigarettes just to quit smoking, there would be wide support," Benowitz says. "The problem is most of the e-cigarette use in the U.S. is dual use with cigarettes." People use e-cigs in places or situations where they can't smoke, like in a restaurant, but continue lighting up when they can, he explains. "My reading of the evidence is that it is quite convincing that e-cigarettes are helping some people quit smoking." Many young e-cigarette users reported throwing away, improperly recycling, or littering the devices. Only 15% of young e-cigarette users reported disposing of empty pods or disposable vapes by dropping them off or sending them for electronic recycling.
Current evidence indicates that using e-cigarettes is dangerous, especially for young people and people who have never smoked. In young people, the use of nicotine can impact the reward system in the brain. In time, this can make the use of other drugs, such as cocaine, more pleasurable, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
E-cigarettes are popular among teens and young adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2019, nearly 28 percent of high-school students and 11 percent of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. About 8 percent of young adults ages 18 to 24 reported using e-cigarettes in 2018. In 2019, nearly 28% of high-school students and 11% of middle-school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that generate an inhalable aerosol that usually contains nicotine. Minnesota teens are using e-cigarettes and vapes at alarming rates, exposing themselves to the harms of nicotine and risking addiction.
In general, most of the cytokines detected in BALF were significantly increased in WT mice exposed to PG with nicotine compared to PG alone or air control [42]. Some of these effects were found to be through nicotine activation of NF-κB signalling albeit in females but not in males. In addition, PG with nicotine caused increased macrophage and CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes cell counts in BALF compared to air control, but these effects were ameliorated when animals were sub-chronically exposed to PG alone [42]. Researchers know more about the long-term effects of smoking than those of vaping. However, vaping products contain a great deal fewer harmful chemicals than cigarettes and can be an effective tool in quitting smoking altogether.
The Policy Scan Project, by the Institute for Global Tobacco Control (at Johns Hopkins University) tracks and reports regulatory approaches to e-cigarettes around the world. In 2012 and 2013 there was a flurry of tobacco company investment in e-cigarettes, both in the United Kingdom (UK) and in the United States (US), a trend which continued in subsequent years. In 2018, 8% of Pierce County 12th graders said they had smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days.
